Kim Owens: Shaping Creativity in Ardsley Park

For over 15 years, Ardsley Park has been home to artist Kim Owens, a creative spirit whose pottery and sculptures bring warmth, charm, and a touch of whimsy to the community. If you've ever visited the neighborhood's Fall Festival, you've likely seen her table filled with unique handcrafted pieces—delightful gifts for kids, beautiful decorative works, and stunning larger pieces that showcase her evolving artistry.

A Journey in Clay
Kim’s artistic journey began in earnest after she retired in 2016. What started as an exploration of pottery quickly grew into a deep passion. “Having thrown many a heavy-bottomed vessel, I have branched out and now primarily hand-build,” she shares. Over time, she has expanded her skillset to include sculpting, glazing, and even painting on glass and fabric.

Her process is just as organic as her art. “I usually start with an idea, and then the idea takes over,” she explains. “Every object becomes itself on its own. As I work on a project, it slowly morphs into being. I’m usually surprised and pleased with the outcome.”

Mastering the Fire and the Finish
Kim’s pottery is finished in a variety of glazing styles, from Electric and Gas Reduction firing to Anagama, a traditional wood-firing method that requires a community effort. The results? Stunning textures, vibrant hues, and truly one-of-a-kind pieces. “It takes a village to achieve Anagama,” she notes, reflecting on the communal nature of the art form. For certain works, she also incorporates acrylic paint, adding an extra layer of detail and vibrancy.

An Artist’s Evolution
Looking back on her artistic journey, Kim is most proud of her growth. “I still have my very first work from first grade—an orange square with squiggly lines and small balls for accent points,” she laughs. “I have to say, my advancement in style is monumental.”  Her pieces are a testament to that growth, and her work continues to evolve with each new technique and experiment.
