EXERCISE AND GOOD FOOD

Exercise and good food are needed for a healthy body.

Several years ago, when I began to have leg cramps, I used a cream for temporary relief. Also, I added to my diet, one banana a day which I read contains minerals which help the leg muscles. During my following annual medical checkup, I told my Primary Care Physician (PCP) about my leg cramps, my family’s similar history, my life activities, and my new diet. He told me that since I was retired and not doing as much walking as I used to, based on his experience, he recommended that the best treatment for me was to also do regular bicycle exercises to
improve blood circulation. So, I began to go to my local gym and primarily walk on the tread mill
and pedal the bicycle machine there. The doctor was right, and this treatment has worked for
me.

The Augusta Pines Gym provides most of the conveniences of other larger public gyms. There,
besides doing my exercises, I read one of my Bibles, in English and Spanish, and meet old
friends and make new ones. I have met many interesting people from many places, such as
Larry Dierkes from Indiana, Eric and Jo Thomson from New Zealand, Scot and Mary Jane
McBride from Mississippi, Alan Scott from Tomball, TX, William Addison from Spring, TX, and
several others who are regular users of the facilities. All of them are very serious about their
work outs and they look like professionals to me. Their ages range from 17 to 70. They
make me feel young because I’m much older than them. They sympathize with me when I tell
them, “These weights feel heavier than they used to be.” However, I try not to strain myself
because I heard someone say, “a man must know his limitations.” So, I’m getting multiple
benefits from the doctor’s recommendation. I’m grateful to my PCP, the technical minds that
develop the exercise machines, my friends at the gym that encourage me, and the Holy Spirit
who keeps feeding me good spiritual food daily.

At the gym, I heard about the story of two boys of the same age that grew up in the same
neighborhood. They played for the same teams through T ball, little league, high school, and
college baseball. They stayed in contact for the rest of their lives, always reminiscing about their baseball days. When they became seniors, they wondered whether they would be able to play baseball in heaven. So, they made a promise to each other that whoever died first, he would return in some form and tell the other if they played baseball in heaven. The friend that passed on first, came back after a few years and brought his message saying, “Yes, the good news is that we do play baseball in heaven. The bad news is that you are pitching this Friday.”
Most of the world does not want to hear about death. Many professions have been created to
make human life longer, even to the illusion of believing they can find the fountain of youth. But
death is real. So far, after reading and listening to many experts in this subject, I have found one answer that satisfies me.

Proverbs 9:10,11 state, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.”
