An Unforgettable Golf Experience in Spring, Texas
Twenty-three years since opening its doors in 2000, Augusta Pines Golf
Club continues to be a premier facility for its members and guests. Young and old have
enjoyed the challenge of the course as well as the 19th hole on the back patio viewing
the pristine 1st, 10th, and 18th fairways. The PGA Champions Tour was played at
Augusta Pines from 2004-2007. The great champion winners were 2007, Langer,
Bernhard, 2006, Haas, Jay; 2005, McNulty, Mark; 2004, Nelson, Larry. Since then, two
more clubs have been added to The Pines Collection – Gleannloch Pines and Highland
Pines. Augusta Pines is an 18-hole golf club designed by Tour 18 Inc., innovators in
golf course technology. The course negotiates mature pines, dogwoods and oaks. The
tees and fairways are Baby Bermuda grass, while the greens feature TifEagle.
The Augusta Pines Ladies Golf Association was founded in early 2002 by Jane Funke,
President, Molly Gatti, Vice President and Angie Sanchez, Secretary/Treasurer. The
league’s mission was to encourage women of all abilities to come and socialize and
enjoy golfing with other women. Molly stated, “At our very first meeting I was impressed
with the group of women who were eager to form an official lady’s golf group at Augusta
Pines.”
The group started with seventeen charter members eager to volunteer to make it
happen. The word spread quickly that the group meets every Wednesday morning at
nine to play golf and have fun. Membership increased to twenty-seven immediately.
Now membership fluctuates between thirty-five and forty members. Molly stated, “We
are still a small group compared to some other clubs but the camaraderie is awesome.”
Jane stated, “It was very rewarding to me to see so many of our members start out
as beginners and become more confident and willing to play on a regular basis and
even start playing more competitively as time went on.”
A big leap for the group was being accepted into the Bluebonnet Interclub group and the
Challenge Cup competition giving the league the opportunity to play and host other
clubs in the north Houston area. The Bluebonnet league consists of eleven different
golf clubs that field competitors according to their handicap in individual stroke play. The
Ladies Competitive Competition consists of 9 women’s golf leagues that test their golf
skills with a team match play competition.
APLGA made giving back to the community a priority by supporting charities like The
Rose, Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center, Marine Toys for Tots, Susan G. Komen for
the Cure and The Montgomery County Women’s Center. From the beginning the Guys
and Dolls tournament was a very popular play day with both the ladies and men group
joining forces to collect donations for their designated charity. The Rose, the first
nonprofit breast cancer organization based on the insured covering the costs of the
uninsured. Canopy enhances the quality of life for individuals affected by cancer and
for those who support them during their journeys. The basic mission of the Marine Toys
for Tots Program is to collect new unwrapped toys and distribute those toys to less
fortunate children at Christmas. The Women’s Center of Montgomery County is a
volunteer driven community organization with a primary focus on freedom from
domestic violence and other forms of abuse.
The leagues members are a diverse group who bring their unique view to our outing
and events. We have had spectacular fun with our themed golf around the world, safari
golf, and social cocktail parties that have had Italian, Thai, Mexican, Chinese, Swedish,
and Cajun cuisine. Young and experienced members enjoy each other’ s support
through their journey to improve their golf game but most importantly support through
their life celebrations and hardships. We welcome anyone looking for a group to grow
your game and friendships just simply call the pro-shop and join us on Wednesday at 9
am.
Molly states, “The friendships I made as a member of this organization are priceless.
Even though age and physical disability prevents me from playing golf I am still a
member and enjoy working the registration desk for the member-guest and member-
member tournaments and of course the always fun Christmas luncheon.”
