TGIF -- Teach Give Inspire Fridays
Save the Date: September 13th for TGIF's Event at TPC Potomac
Lisa Friedlander
Founded in 2018, TGIF hosts events that provide meaningful content for women to empower themselves, their families and their communities. Stroll interviewed TGIF founder Barbara Guterman of Potomac, who filled us in about the organization and who welcomes you to register for the group's next event, September 13th, the first time it will be held in Avenel at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.
Please tell us how TGIF originated.
TGIF was founded on the notion of getting beyond “Hi, how are you?” a common but often meaningless phrase that is friendly but does not allow for women to connect on a deeper more authentic level. I wanted to cultivate a place and program where women could authentically share their powerful stories of knowledge, philanthropy and resilience and perseverance in a variety of fields and purposes. It is the shared philosophy of lifting one another up as we rise, that makes the program unique and helps to build our community. Connection, real connection is key. We provide a platform for Women to Inform with Passion.
Please tell us about your events in general and about the TGIF September event.
There are always three speakers for each event. One who TEACHES the audience about something that is important for women to be aware of, one who shares about GIVING back to women or other organizations in the community in some way, and one who INSPIRES with a story of resilience, courage and love. We have had over 45 speakers focused on a wide range of topics since our inception.
The program has a unique audience of women from all professions and all stages of life. The demographic is from 35-70, and generally includes professionals from varied cultures and backgrounds.
Our theme for Friday, September 13th is: Breaking Barriers and Building Dreams in Basketball, in Business, and in Building Inclusive Communities. This unique program features three powerhouse women who have each shattered the glass ceiling in their respective fields paving the way for so many women, children and dreamers:
-- Danielle Cantor Jeweler is a National Basketball Players Association Certified Agent, representing current and retired NBA talent and has been recognized as the only female registered agent with active NBA clients. Danielle will teach us about using the power of sport to unite, educate and inspire young people to lift one another up to “all rise together.”
-- Lisa Friedlander, Avenel resident, is a deeply committed philanthropist who has raised millions for Children’s National Medical Center through the Heartsongs Luncheon Fund and Teens with Heartsongs. She is also an attorney and successful founder committed to sharing her expertise to give opportunities to other entrepreneurs helping to raise millions as an Angel Investor.
-- Jillian Copeland is a dream builder with the power, determination, courage and grit to make things happen. She will no doubt inspire us with her perseverance and commitment to creating inclusive communities for individuals with special needs. Driven by her own son’s struggles, Jillian has been widely recognized for her groundbreaking work as a tireless champion for people with disabilities.
