There's No Place Like Alaska

There is no place like Alaska, our Last Frontier. Ask anyone why they return time and time again and they’ll tell you it’s because you could never see all of it, it’s always changing, and the wildlife sighting is unpredictable and wondrous. The cruise tour is the perfect way to see Alaska. It combines an inland adventure with a cruise, which is the only way to see the magnificent glaciers, bays and waterways that comprise the 3.3 million acres of Glacier Bay National Park and the whales, orcas, bears and eagles that call it home.

Our June Alaskan Cruise Tour was perfect: we had sunny, wonderful weather, and we experienced Alaska during the longest days of the year. There is sundown, but during the fabulous month of June, it produces only a subtle dusk during the wee hours of the night.  Our group began on the Kenai Peninsula, fishing, hiking and searching for moose and bear.  Fabulous views from the top of Alyeska and from Portage Glacier gave us a preview of the magnificence to come.  After a stay at the iconic Hotel Captain Cook, we headed to Denali. As we drove north from Anchorage, the perfection of Denali rose from the ground into the clear blue sky.  It’s snow-covered peak, sparkling in the sun, was visible for most of the ride. Our luck held as we spent three amazing days touring Denali National Park, ATVing through the Alaskan wilderness, hiking, white-water rafting and grilling salmon outdoors, in perfect weather.  The land tour ended with the amazing Alaska scenic railway trip from Denali to Whittier, where we boarded the Grand Princess for the Voyage of the Glaciers.

The wonders of Glacier Bay National Park and Hubbard Glacier can only be viewed by sea. The abundance of glaciers, mountains, and the endless opportunities for wildlife viewing made the first days of uninterrupted sailing priceless. Then we hit the ports. The charming town of Skagway has so much to see and do, and the white hoods of the Bald Eagles dot the trees like Christmas lights. The Scenic White Pass Railway is a must do, and boat trips, hikes and mining history abound. Juneau presents the amazing Mendenhall Glacier and visitor center, from where one can hike endlessly, viewing this beautiful glacier and Auke Bay from numerous vantage points. The last stop was Ketchikan, a mecca for scenic boat and fishing trips, whale-watching, totem poles, lumberjack shows and breweries.

We finished our wonderful cruise in Vancouver. What a beautiful place! One of the highlights was Victoria, capitol of British Columbia and another startlingly picturesque city. There are so many wonders in Alaska, and the Glacier Bay cruise gets you to where no one else can.
