Scarlett’s journey to Bill and Helen began with a touch of serendipity. Bill had mentioned to their daughter Regina, a Lieutenant Officer at the San Diego Humane Society, that he was on the lookout for a medium-sized dog to keep him company. His ideal choice? A Doodle. Regina, however, was quick to point out that such dogs rarely ended up in shelters due to their popularity. Fate had other plans, though. Within days, a woman brought in Scarlett, claiming she found her near a freeway. It became evident that Scarlett had recently given birth to a dozen puppies and was likely mourning their loss. Despite her initial shyness and need for attention, Scarlett quickly bonded with Bill and his wife, finding solace and love in her new family. 

Three-year-old Scarlett had a rough start; she had never been groomed or trained. Yet, her intelligence and eagerness to please have made her a quick learner. With every training session, Scarlett’s loving nature shines brighter, endearing her even more to her new family. Her new home also includes Sugar, a senior Dachshund rescue who has been a comforting presence for Scarlett. 

Scarlett’s personality is as vibrant as her glossy black curls. She has a knack for learning the basics with ease, thanks to her desire to please her humans. Her favorite activities include lounging by Bill’s big chair, where she often receives affectionate head pats. Scarlett’s quirks include her initial love for the three large beds her new family bought her. While she loved them all at first, she now prefers the floor next to Bill and Helen’s bed, proving that comfort comes from proximity to loved ones rather than fancy accommodations. 

One funny anecdote that Bill fondly recalls is Scarlett’s enthusiastic approach to bedtime. Initially, they thought she would enjoy the luxury of her new beds scattered around the house. To their surprise, Scarlett would try each one, almost as if she were Goldilocks in a fairy tale. But ultimately, she decided that the spot beside Bill and his wife’s bed was “just right.”

Spoiling Scarlett has become something of a delightful ritual in the household. Scarlett has developed the charming habit of expecting a treat every time she enters the kitchen—a place she frequents quite often! Her growing list of demands includes belly rubs, gourmet dog treats, and regular grooming sessions to keep her curls in top shape. It’s clear that Scarlett has gone from a rescue in need of love to a cherished member of the family who knows exactly how to get what she wants. 

For Bill and his wife, having Scarlett as part of their family is a source of immense joy and companionship. They appreciate the security of their neighborhood, the camaraderie with their neighbors and friends, and the breathtaking views from their backyard overlooking the 6th green. Scarlett fits right in with the local wildlife that occasionally visits their yard, adding to the charm of their home. With their expansive family scattered across Texas, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and San Diego County, visits from their children, grandkids, and great-grandkids are frequent and cherished. Scarlett has had the pleasure of meeting most of them, further cementing her place in the family’s heart. 

Bill and Helen moved into their home in March 2021 after putting in an offer on New Year’s Day 2020. Since then, their lives have been enriched not only by the stunning views and friendly neighbors but also by the unconditional love of their furry companions. Scarlett’s presence brings an extra layer of happiness to their lives, making every day a little brighter.
