Meet Your Neighbor: Debbie Barr

When Debbie Barr first drove into Kinderton Village, she felt as though she had stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting. The picturesque homes, wide streets shaded by towering trees, and the inviting sidewalks immediately captured her heart. It was love at first sight. That very day, she made the decision to call Kinderton Village home, and since August 2021, she has embraced the community with open arms.
A Pennsylvania native, Debbie grew up surrounded by the breathtaking autumn landscapes of the Northeast, and the vibrant fall colors in Bermuda Run bring back fond memories of home. She is a proud Penn State graduate with a degree in journalism, earned at the university’s iconic “Happy Valley” campus. After college, she and her husband relocated to North Carolina, where she spent years dedicated to raising her family before diving into a diverse and dynamic professional journey.
Debbie’s career path has been anything but ordinary. She has worked in the dean’s office at the UNCSA film school, sold Apple products to colleges, and spent five years as a communications specialist at MedCost. In 2008, she pursued a master’s degree in health education at East Carolina University, which led to a decade-long role as a health educator at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. However, at her core, Debbie has always been a writer.
Her passion for writing was evident from an early age. As a first grader, she painstakingly copied pages from her reading primer, proudly declaring to her family that she had written a book (long before she understood the concept of plagiarism!). In college, after briefly considering a major in recreation and parks, she realigned with her true calling—journalism.
Debbie’s writing career has been as eclectic as her professional journey. She has penned magazine articles, research study curricula, patient education materials for chronic diseases, ESL newsletters, and even prenatal education web content. Yet, her greatest love is books. Her first book was published more than 40 years ago and remains in print today. Last year, she reached a personal milestone—publishing her tenth book. Each of her books, including her latest series of mini-books, is faith-based and published by esteemed publishers such as Zondervan, Moody, and Tyndale. Though she initially set a goal of writing ten books, she now believes there may be more waiting to be written.
These days, Debbie enjoys working from home, often writing in her kitchen with papers and her laptop spread across the counter. When she needs a break, she takes long, peaceful walks around the neighborhood or along the scenic path beneath I-40. While she continues to contribute occasional articles to Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family magazines, she is taking a well-deserved pause to reflect, pray, and discern what her next creative endeavor might be.
As she looks ahead, one thing is certain—Debbie Barr’s story is far from over. Whether through her words, her faith, or her love for her community, she continues to inspire those around her.
