A Family Committed to Kindness: Meet the Hundleys
When Chris, Shelley, and Lily Hundley relocated from Winston-Salem in July of 2021, they couldn’t have found a house or community that they love any more than the home and neighbors that they found in Kinderton Village.
Growing up in the Dobson area, Chris was taught the importance of hard work and community by his parents as well as his grandmother, who ran the family farm for many years on her own. Upon finishing high school, Chris began working full-time to pay his way through college. Chris earned his Bachelor of Science in Business, as well as his Masters in Business Administration from Gardner Webb University. Over the last 25 years, Chris has held multiple finance positions with furniture, manufacturing, and hospitality companies, however, his true passion lies in manufacturing, which has made his current position of Complex Controller at Hood Container Corporation the perfect fit for his interest and skill set.
Shelley, originally from Rutherford County, grew up being shown the value of giving back to your community by her parents. Shelley’s father worked in the field of finance and manufacturing, and her mother was a special education teacher. Both of Shelley’s parents also volunteered extensively with their church, the local Rotary Club, and many other organizations. After high school, Shelley attended Converse College, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education in Special Education. While teaching high school, Shelley achieved her National Board Certification and later became the Applied Behavior Analysis and Transition Specialist for the school district she worked for.
While Chris and Shelley met and dated in 2001, due to the distance between their homes as well as other factors, their relationship didn’t quite take off. Shortly after re-meeting in 2010, Chris and Shelley both realized that they were better together, prompting Shelley to return to North Carolina, and in September of 2011, exactly 10 years to the date of their first blind date, they were married.
Since early on in their relationship, Chris and Shelly have made helping others in our community a priority. Between the two of them, they have done a great deal of community service and have spent countless hours volunteering with groups such as the Providence Culinary Training Program and Caring Services Substance Abuse Recovery Program, and they were foster parents before moving – a role they hope to continue in the future. They also became involved with Joy Prom Piedmont-Triad and created The Fairy Godmother’s Closet, where girls with Special Needs could receive a free prom dress each year. Chris and Shelley’s work with Joy Prom has continued for the past 9.5 years, and in 2020, Shelley took the position of Executive Director of that organization. Their family’s involvement with Joy Prom has continued to be a very important part of their lives.
Within their neighborhood, the Hundleys also don’t shy away from stepping up. Chris serves on the Kinderton Master Board, lending his expertise and vision to their community, while Shelley dedicates her time to help with and host events for children in their neighborhood and loves to volunteer at Pinebrook Elementary, where Lily is a student.
Their daughter Lily is already making her mark as well. Known for her kindness and willingness to help others, Lily has a special way of making everyone feel included. Her compassion for her classmates and neighbors is noticed by many, and her bubbly personality is always evident. Lily loves attending Pinebrook Elementary and excels in reading and writing. Lily is also a gymnast and is in her first year as part of the competitive gymnastics team at Clemmons Gymnastics.
The Hundley family lives by the motto “In order to make the world a better place, you must leave things a little better than how you found them,” as they truly believe that the only way to make change is to BE that change.
As the Hundley family continues to become more established in Bermuda Run, they remain steadfast in their mission to serve. Whether through fostering children, volunteering at local schools, or supporting charitable organizations, Chris, Shelley, and Lily embody the essence of a family dedicated to making the world a better place—one act of kindness at a time.
