Meet the Nevin Family

By Kai Curry

Washingtonians Luke and Amy fell in love at an Irish bar in Renton called A Terrible Beauty. They shared it was a setup for Amy, as Luke knew he was meeting her, but she did not know.
“The rest is history.” In 2023, the couple decided to move their family back to Gig Harbor, where
Amy is from, and onto Muir Drive NW in Canterwood. “It’s so quiet!” They raved. They love
the amenities, the trees (though “getting used to the maintenance associated with them is quite
the endeavor”). They also love access to all Canterwood has to offer with the pool and golf
Course.

Luke and Amy like golfing and going for walks in the neighborhood. Luke, the West Seattle Golf
Course Manager, enjoys golf not just as a hobby but also as a job; while Amy, Vice President,
Strategic Project and Government Relations for WSP, USA, also enjoys gardening and “loves her new yard.” They also watch football - Go Seahawks! And baseball – Go Mariners!

The Nevin family is either at the golf course or at the beach. “We spend a lot of time golfing together. We also go to Bella Bella beach quite often with the occasional trip to Deadman’s Island.” While enjoying themselves indoors or outdoors, Elle King, the Eagles, and Classic Rock will be playing in their earbuds. On TV, the boys like to watch “Fairly Odd Parents” and “Ghostbusters” For Mom and Dad, it’s “golf tournaments and American Idol - when it is not football season.” Every year, they host Thanksgiving at their house, although Amy’s favorite holiday is Christmas.

Both have been living in western Washington long enough to be locals through and through.
Amy moved to Gig Harbor with her twin sister in 6th grade from further up north in Shoreline.
She went to Goodman Middle School and Gig Harbor High School. Luke was originally from
Portland, Oregon but his family moved to Federal Way when he was seven. Luke attended
Western Washington University and Amy attended the University of Washington – GO DAWGS!
The family, which includes their sons McCoy, nine years old, and Finn, seven years old, have
now been in Canterwood for one year. They also have a mini Bernedoodle named Rey. “We
decided to move back to Gig Harbor last year to be closer to family,” they told us. “McCoy and
Finn have cousins who live in Gig Harbor and they enjoy spending time with them, playing
Pokémon or paddle boarding at the beach. We also were looking for a good school system for the boys.” Look no further than Gig Harbor and Canterwood for everything good living has to offer.

In addition to paddle boarding, McCoy and Finn love to swim or kayak at the beach. “They also
enjoy building Legos and playing Roblox.” Other waterside activities include boating, fishing,
and crabbing. Not surprisingly, favorite hangout spots also have to do with water and golf, such
as visiting Orcas Island and Manzanita, OR. “We also spend a lot of time with our extended family from both sides.” Amy’s two sisters and parents live in Gig Harbor - “another benefit of moving back,” the couple told us.

A little bit of wine tasting might also be on the schedule in Manzanita (also known for its scenic shoreline and good eats), or at the famed Woodinville wineries. Amy also enjoys bringing her mom and sisters to wine tasting as she is a wine club member. Speaking of eats, the family loves to partake of the menu right here at Canterwood, as well as at the Blazing Onion, Applebee’s, Red Robin, and the Met. Family dinner might be “tacos or a night out at the Club!”

As a travel tradition, they spend two weeks every summer on Orcas Island and one week in Manzanita. Like most of our neighbors, Luke and Amy are also involved in the community in a
bigger way. “Luke runs a non-profit golf tournament series, called the CLARKY series,” which he set up with a few others during the pandemic. “All proceeds from the tournaments are donated to First Tee.” We are lucky this dynamic, caring family chose our neighborhood!
