Georgie's Organizing and Decorating
“It’s not about stuff ... it’s about a better way of life.”
Georgie Salazar thought she was approaching that “empty nester” stage of her life with her four grown children venturing out on their own. That, along with a series of events, led her to start a business in organizing and decorating. She’s no longer an empty nester, but she has
eagerly moved forward with her business venture.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Jacksonville, FL, Georgie moved to the area in 2006 when her husband took a position with Community Physicians of Indiana as an OBGYN. She adds, “We chose the area for the low cost of living, conservative values, and great schools. We were correct.”
The Salazars have four biological children:
Lukas, 27, and his wife, Maddie, live in Louisiana, where he works in the film production industry.
Silas, 24, currently works side jobs as he applies for the Indianapolis Fire Dept.
Juliette, 22, is finishing her nursing degree at Anderson University in May. She will marry in September and will be relocating to Clearwater, FL.
Paul, 20, is a sophomore at Liberty University majoring in civil engineering.
Three years ago, their family changed. Georgie explains, “We were blessed to also have custody of my two grandnieces, Veronica, 14, and Adrian, 12. All my children have attended Middle School Center and Center Grove High School.”
Why did you start your business?
There were a few things that encouraged me to start my business. The very first seed that was planted was the movie Blended. In that movie, Drew Barrymore was a professional organizer. I thought that would be such a fun job!
The second reason was a very good friend of mine, Peggy Cohen, who sadly passed in January 2021. She had moved into her patio home but had a double knee replacement and needed some help with her garage. I went over and put it all together and didn’t think anything of it. I also assisted her with several decorating jobs. She went on to encourage me to start a business. After all, decorating and organizing go hand in hand. She really helped me find my gifting and gave me the confidence to move forward.
The third reason was timing. I was coming upon what I thought at the time an empty nester. I did not realize I would be back in the middle school carpool line again! With my husband’s long work hours and loving encouragement, it just felt right to get the business started.
What is unique about your business?
I honestly believe that my business is unique for several reasons. One, I am doing this because I want to; my husband is the breadwinner of the family and is an amazing provider. To my downfall, according to my bookkeeper and marketing gentleman, I am not doing this for the money. Although I am learning you do need it to run a business! Two, I genuinely care about people. I had a rough childhood in some ways. I learned that the one thing I could control was my space. When it was clean, decorated, and organized, I felt better and safe. My business is not about stuff; it’s about my clients and raising them up to a better way of life. Having a better attitude and better habits. Teaching them that life is lived from the inside out and the spaces around us reflect what is going on internally.
Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice can you offer to the residents of the community?
The best advice would be if you need help don’t ever be embarrassed to ask. We all have life situations that can pull us from the daily chores. We can get behind, and that is OK. Sometimes you just want someone there to help pick out a paint color or decorations. Just need someone to help clear the clutter while saying kind words.
Georgie adds, “I am not perfect, but I do strive for excellence in everything I do. I am looking to grow my business so I can hire single mothers with children. That is my big goal!”
