Cohasset Native Sean Bishop of Ground Effects Landscaping

Owner and Cohasset native Sean Bishop

When it comes to his profession, Sean Bishop is unapologetic: “I love what I do, and it doesn’t
feel like work to me. It’s still fun after 30 years of doing it.”

This is representative of the enthusiasm he and the entire team at Ground Effects Landscaping bring to each and every job they do. Ground Effects—or “GFX Landscaping” to the cognoscenti—has been taking care of landscaping, landscape architecture, and hardscaping needs on the South Shore for 30 years and counting.

And the South Shore is where this story begins, Sean tells us: “I grew up in Cohasset, and I
started out as the kid in the neighborhood who actually liked to work and do odd jobs—mow lawns, shovel snow, rake leaves—and I got pretty good at it. I had an interest in construction and building things and being outside. After high school, I got recruited to the University of Rhode Island to play football and I majored in landscape architecture.”

Sean spent his summers working for a landscaping firm back home in Cohasset, and when the
owner retired, Sean spun his own business off of the existing client base along with some folks
who remember his youthful entrepreneurship.

This was the beginning of Ground Effects Landscaping, and from those early days, Sean and
his team have guided the company to greater and greater success each season thanks in
part to quality work and loyal customers.

“Customers that I had in Cohassett growing up started becoming customers of my company. It was literally like a home-grown, very grassroots, rough-and-tumble beginning. And then every year the company grew and grew and great, and now 30 years later we’re on our third building that we own and we have crews going out into the community every day.”

GFX Landscaping is a full-service landscaping business, with experience in landscaping,
greenspace care, hardscaping, water/snow management, and landscape architecture.

That last piece is near and dear to Sean’s heart, and he rightly views it as a vital community
function: “I have to do a lot of industry advocacy with the tech schools and stuff like that," he says. "Try building a building today without greenspace around it—you can’t do it."

"What we do as landscape architects affects everyone's quality of life, because we create the outdoor spaces you live in—parks, greenways, playgrounds, sports fields, we do it all. We shape the community and how your life is. Whether you realize it or not, the work my guys do every single day affects everyone’s life. We’re at the forefront of climate change—how are you
going to fight climate change? You plant more trees and create more greenspace.”

The quality work they do speaks for itself. The team is proud of how they manage every piece of the process to ensure their clients get exactly what they deserve. “We’re a full-service business—we can design your project, build your project, and then maintain it for years after it’s done to keep it looking the way it should look," Sean says. "I think that’s what sets us apart from other companies—we can handle any task you need, from A to Z. Landscaping, hardscaping, snow and water management—we do it all and we make sure it’s done right.”

Now’s the time to start enjoying and improving our outdoor spaces. Whether your lawn needs
a touch-up, you want a patio or outdoor kitchen installed, or you’d just like a fresh take on
your landscaping, Ground Effects Landscaping can bring your vision to life.

Sean takes a personal interest in each project, ensuring that the life and love for which the GFX crew is famous shine through every time. Don’t let the summer months pass you by without starting the journey towards your dream outdoor spaces, whatever they may be.
