A Day in the Life of the Laskowski Family:
Embracing Community in East Highlands
The Laskowski family is a vibrant and active unit, comprising Melissa and Mike, their two sons Evan and Nathan, and their beloved golden doodle, Gertie. Evan, the eldest at 15, is an avid sports enthusiast, while 12-year-old Nathan balances his love for sports with a passion for music. Gertie, the family’s playful and energetic dog, rounds out the household with her daily antics and affectionate nature.
The Laskowski family’s journey to East Highlands began seven years ago, though their roots in Naperville stretch back two decades. Settling in Cincinnati, Ohio after college the couple moved to Naperville when Mike received a job opportunity. They first settled in South Naperville, where they built their home in South Pointe. However, their love for the charm and character of East Highlands, with its mature trees and varied housing architecture, drew them to the neighborhood. In 2015, they made it official by working with Charles Vincent George Architects and Hellyer Custom Builders to construct their dream home on Thornwood Drive, with Melissa taking the reins on the design process.
Mike and Melissa’s educational journeys began at the University of Dayton in Ohio, where they met. Mike earned a BS in Business Finance and later an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He now works in investment management at PPM America in Chicago. Melissa, with a BS in Business Marketing, later pursued a degree in Interior Design, a field she is passionate about. She is the Founder and Principal Designer of Vermilion Interiors, Inc., a boutique interior design firm serving Naperville and beyond.
Each member of the Laskowski family brings unique talents and interests to the table. Mike enjoys biking, running, reading non-fiction, cooking, grilling, and playing golf. He also has a knack for remembering facts and figures, making him an asset in trivia games. Melissa’s passion for interior design is evident in her continuous learning and research. She also loves gardening, playing golf, and singing karaoke. Both Mike and Melissa share a love for cooking.
Evan, soon to be a freshman at Naperville Central High School, is a sports fanatic with a particular fondness for baseball and the Chicago Cubs. Nathan, entering 7th grade at Kennedy Junior High School, balances his love for sports with his musical talents, playing the piano and flute.
The Laskowski family cherishes their time together, especially during holidays and special occasions. Thanksgiving is marked by their participation in the Naperville Noon Lions Turkey Trot, followed by a large family dinner. Christmas is a highlight, with Melissa decorating the house and Mike handling the outdoor lights. They enjoy visiting the lights at Brookfield Zoo and celebrating with extended family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Living in East Highlands offers the Laskowski family a plethora of favorite spots and activities. They relish dining at local restaurants like Hugo’s, Empire, and Rosebud, and Friday nights often feature pizza from Uncle Pete’s. Strolling along the riverwalk, visiting shops, and enjoying ice cream at Kilwin’s are regular family outings. They also love bike rides on the local paths and exploring the Farmers Market at 5th Avenue.
The Laskowski family is actively involved in their community, attending events like Naperville’s National Nights Out and the First Fling. Mike participates in the Naperville half marathon supporting team NEF district 203, and the family engages in philanthropic events at their parish, Saints Peter and Paul. Their contributions help foster a strong sense of community spirit in East Highlands.
For the Laskowski family, East Highlands is more than just a place to live; it’s a community filled with friendly faces and shared experiences. They appreciate the neighborhood’s beauty and the convenience of being close to everything they need. Walking to and from Highlands Elementary School, where their boys attended, holds many cherished memories.
One of their favorite family activities is their weekly bike ride on the bike path, often stopping at the wooden bridge by Pioneer Park to explore the river. These moments of togetherness and exploration are among the many reasons they love living in East Highlands.
The Laskowski family exemplifies the spirit of community and the joy of family life in East Highlands. Their active involvement, diverse interests, and deep-rooted love for their neighborhood make them a cherished part of Naperville.
