Mandala Milroy admits she wasn’t always used to the concept of “pet dogs.” Sure, she grew up on a farm and trained her parents’ German Shepherds in pet obedience and various farm life and cattle tasks for as long as she can remember. But they were considered “working dogs.” They didn’t come inside the house, lay on the bed or couch next to her, play with chew toys, sleep for hours on end, and perhaps misbehave a little bit. Needless to say, she was taken aback the first time she saw these scenarios playing out.

“I don’t know … maybe I was a little isolated on that farm,” she said with a laugh. “It wasn’t until I was old enough to have sleepovers at my friends’ houses that I saw pet dogs for the first time, and it was the weirdest thing.

“I remember asking my parents, ‘Why don’t our dogs do this?’”

Mandala still loves being around a strong and capable working dog, especially her dogs Abigail, Ranger, Skye, and Kodiak. She’s even trained Arabian horses. But she’s endeared herself among Denton County residents—including those right here in Forrestridge—who love their fur babies but struggle to achieve their pet training goals and need help from someone who has spent thousands of hours addressing obedience, behavioral issues, and improving owner education to foster more enjoyable human-canine relationships.

With Cerberus K9 Services, Mandala meets all those criteria with practical, dependable, and balanced training. She also holds advanced degrees in Applied Psychology and relies on science-based practical methodologies for training and behavior modification.

To Mandala, these principles are far from one and the same. So, while she can certainly train your dog to sit, lay down, come when called, handle time in a crate, have threshold manners, walk on a loose leash without pulling, and potty training, she also addresses the root cause of dog-to-dog aggression, separation anxiety, nipping, human aggression, fear-based behaviors, and more.

Cerberus offers several programs, including puppy kindergarten, day training, board and training, and in-home private lessons.

“I’m rarely the first trainer someone has turned to for help,” Mandala said. In her free time, she also volunteers as a rescue foster for canine behavioral and medical cases and at her local animal shelter. “They have tried different methods at different times in the dog’s life, and perhaps those methods were effective in some areas but not others. Sometimes, a new problem develops. Other times, the original problem got worse. As a result, the owner is left wondering, ‘What do we do now?’ I take pride in resolving these issues.”

She added, “More than just training the dog, it’s important to spend equal time with the owner and the dog and explain the reason for limitations and how to address them correctly. This prevents the dog from reverting to the same behaviors. It also helps the owner understand the why behind their dog’s actions and eventually learn how to resolve them confidently on their own.”
