Spring Blooms & Artful Delights
The arrival of spring in Gates Mills is heralded by colorfully blooming daffodil, crocus and hyacinth, fragrant flowering trees and of course the annual Gates Mills Art Show. This year the Village celebrates its 53rd anniversary show.
Artist: Eileen O’Connor (past Best in Show winner)
The show itself sprung simply enough from the need to fill the time between reel changes during the Gates Mills Film Society’s Sunday night movie presentations at The Community House. In the spring of 1971, Art Show founder Mo Novello and Film Society members decided to display artwork from local artists to fill that time void.
The Gates Mills Art Show remains thankful of contributions from the Cleveland area artists who became known as the “THE CLEVELAND SCHOOL”. The Cleveland School was renowned for its watercolor painting, and also included well-known printmakers, sculptors, enamellists, and ceramists.
As many of these Cleveland School artists entered, won and juried the Gates Mills Art Show, Gates Mills continues in their tradition by annually inviting northeast Ohio artists 18 or older to submit their original works including paintings, drawings, graphic prints, photographs and sculpture completed within the past two years.
This year the Gates Mills Art Show will award $4,100 to winning artists. Additional information and a fillable entry form can be found on line at: https://www.gatesmillsvillage.com/recreation/art-show.
The 2024 Gates Mills Art Show will run from Sunday, April 21st through Sunday, May 5th. Show hours are noon to 3PM and 7 to 9PM, Monday thru Friday and 1 to 5PM Saturdays and Sundays at the Gates Mills Community House, 1460 Chagrin River Road, Gates Mills.
Village residents should have received a solicitation in their mail to become a Patron of the Gates Mills Art Show. For a fee of $30 per person, Villagers can become an Art Show Patron, enjoy hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer at the Patron’s Preview Party on Saturday evening, April 21, 2024 and receive first opportunity to purchase the art on display.
