Community Unity

Joy Banish, Gates Mills Resident, Encourages Community Volunteering with Greater Cleveland Volunteers

Greater Cleveland Volunteers, a local nonprofit organization, has been providing volunteers to help our community for the past 50 years. We promote volunteerism and match people with opportunities to help at many different organizations throughout Cuyahoga County. Over the past 50 years, 28,000 volunteers have provided more than 18 million hours of service.

Our volunteers are age 18 and older and are making a difference by helping with one-time events, special projects, and ongoing needs.

Volunteers help teach children to read; prepare and deliver meals to homebound adults; sort, pack and distribute food; comfort patients in hospitals, nursing homes and hospice care; provide job coaching and interviewing skills to those looking for work; mentor youth; assist guests at local arts organizations; help with many community events; and much more.

The pandemic caused many people to step away from serving, so there is a great need for more volunteers to help. Volunteering not only helps people in need, and our community, it also benefits volunteers themselves. Research has shown that volunteering regularly improves your physical and mental health. It can also increase your social opportunities and allow you to learn new skills.

I am a 22-year resident of Gates Mills and know that there is a strong sense of community here. Many of our residents give their time to help with Gates Mills programs and special events and that is what makes our hometown so special. I encourage you to also consider giving your time to help organizations outside of Gates Mills.

Greater Cleveland Volunteers works with a wide range of nonprofits, from newly started organizations to some of our largest long-standing nonprofits. There are many needs, and we would be happy to find opportunities that fit your interests and availability.
