Winston and Greta

Winston (Left) & Greta (Right)

Introducing two delightful new residents of our neighborhood—Winston and Greta, the beloved dogs of the Schwartz family that moved to Gates Mills just over eight months ago. Their owners, who have roots in both Kirtland and Hudson, chose our village for its unique blend of city convenience and country charm, and it seems like Winston and Greta are just as smitten with the area as their human family members.

Meet the Duo: Winston is an 8-year-old yellow Labrador with a dignified air about him, which is probably why his name suits him so well. His owners tell me that he acts like a distinguished gentleman, and I can’t help but smile at the thought of him calmly surveying his surroundings with the wisdom of his years. Greta, on the other hand, is a 2-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog with a heart as big as her fluffy coat. Her Swiss heritage inspired her name, and it’s a perfect fit for this friendly, affectionate pup.

A Family Tradition: The family has a long history with Labradors, having raised seven of them over the years—five of whom were trained for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Greta is the first non-Labrador to join their household, and from what I’ve heard, she’s fitting in beautifully. The naming of their dogs is a fun little tradition: the wife, Andrea, picks the dog, and the husband picks the name. It seems to be a system that works well, as both Winston and Greta wear their names with pride.

Different Personalities, Equal Charm: Winston and Greta couldn’t be more different in personality, but that’s what makes them such a perfect pair. Winston is a classic “mama’s boy,” always sticking close to his owner and enjoying the simple pleasures of life—like a good nap. Greta, on the other hand, is an extrovert through and through, showering everyone she meets with love and affection. It’s clear that these two have their owners wrapped around their paws.

Favorite Pastimes: When they’re not busy being adored by their family, Winston and Greta enjoy some well-deserved playtime. They both have a soft spot for stuffed Kongs, Nylabones, and anything that squeaks. But what really stands out are the memories the family has of them as mischievous puppies—those early days filled with cute, albeit naughty, antics that only made them more lovable.

Exploring: Since moving to Gates Mills, Winston and Greta have made themselves right at home. They love lounging on the back patio, taking long walks through the village, and, of course, swimming whenever they get the chance. While they haven’t met too many new canine friends just yet, the presence of other Bernese Mountain Dogs in the neighborhood hints at the possibility of future playdates.

Looking Ahead: The family is still exploring our area to find dog-friendly spots where Winston and Greta can run free and enjoy themselves. I have no doubt they’ll soon discover the perfect places, and maybe we’ll all see more of Winston and Greta around the village.

In the meantime, let’s all give a warm welcome to Winston and Greta, two wonderful dogs who have already brought so much joy to their family—and are sure to bring smiles to anyone lucky enough to meet them.
