Years ago, Virginia Bischoff heard a segment on NPR (National Public Radio) about the rising demand for junk removal. Inspired, she came home with a name for the business she and her husband, Aaron, should start: Clean Slate.

The name, Bischoff said, immediately stuck, and the couple’s business took off from there.

“I became very passionate about the business right from the start,” Aaron said. “It was fun and interesting to find unique and sometimes funny junk finds. When things really got going, it was like a snowball effect.”

Tragically, Aaron lost Virginia, the mother of their youngest son, Charlie, in an accident on December 6, 2020. Since then, he has worked to carry on their business and rebuild his life.

Clean Slate is one of the few companies in Louisville that offers both junk removal and moving services. Aaron remains “hands-on” in the business, ensuring that customers receive the highest level of service.

The company’s slogan, “Reclaim your space!”, reflects its mission to help customers declutter and simplify. With a team that has become well-loved in the Norton Commons neighborhood, Clean Slate also partners with Habitat ReStore to donate furniture and other reusable items.

Aaron is passionate about helping people take back valuable space in their homes.

“The best advice I can give to my neighbors is to live minimally!” Aaron said. “I’ve been able to see firsthand over the years the result of holding on to so much ‘stuff.’ Before you buy something to bring home, briefly think about the long-term plan for that item.”

To maintain a clutter-free home, Aaron suggests doing regular “small purges” each season, or at least once a year.

“Decluttering on a regular maintenance level will prevent the difficult task of having to sort through a decade or a lifetime collection of clutter,” he said.

A lifelong Louisville resident, Aaron lives in Norton Commons with his children, Bryce (19) and Charlie (5). His parents, whom he credits for his strong work ethic, also reside in the neighborhood.

“Beyond everything that has happened, we are still very blessed,” Aaron said.
