Meet Elizabeth Shaver

Founder & Designer of Phae Lingerie

How long has it been in business?

Phae Lingerie launched on the Summer Solstice, June 20th, 2021.

  • What prompted you to start your own business?
I combined my love for empowering women, design, and sustainability. I believe women should truly love to wear their lingerie, so I decided to design lingerie to evoke their confidence while doing business in a sustainable and ethical manner.

  • Describe what your company does:
Phae Lingerie creates sustainable silk luxe lingerie for the Femme POV. Phae Lingerie designs from the femme perspective, unlike traditional lingerie designed solely for the male gaze. Phae Lingerie makes both you and Mother Earth feel like the goddesses you are by:
-Flattering the female body and curves using unique femme-focused design principles
-Giving freedom and comfort by design to allow her to move and express herself as she pleases
-Using only the softest & highest quality 100% sustainable silk sourced from Manhattan's Garment District
-Creating the lingerie with zero-waste and ethical production standards that empower female artisans
-Delivering an Earth-friendly, unique packaging experience only using recyclable or compostable materials

Phae’s zero-waste practices are a pioneer in the lingerie industry. Zero-waste is a movement that focuses on creating zero waste through the brand’s existence. In the fashion industry, the zero waste movement is focused on how the garment is produced.

  • Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (whether general or specific) can you offer to the residents of your neighborhood?

Behind the oil industry, the fashion industry is the largest polluter in the world. Here are a couple of tips below to help you know how to support change in the fashion industry:

When shopping, be aware of what material is used to make your clothing. While synthetic fabrics (like polyester and spandex) are less expensive, natural fabrics (like silk and cotton) will last longer and stay in new conditions for much longer. Over the course of the garment’s lifetime, the extra upfront cost will make up its value with the length and quality of its life.

Also, learning more about how your garments are produced helps ensure your dollars are not unknowingly supporting sweatshops and unethical labor practices. Unfortunately, it is all too common in the fashion industry.

  • How did you decide on this industry (events that led up to where you are now, where you went to school, etc.)?

My favorite way to express myself has always been through fashion. I chose to follow this passion in college by studying to work in the business side of fashion by earning two undergraduate degrees (Marketing and Apparel Production & Product Development) from the University of Arkansas and my MBA (Master’s in Business Administration) from the University of Tennessee.

I learned about the e-commerce side of fashion by interning with luxury fashion brand DUNCAN in NYC and currently working remotely for Macy’s e-commerce shoe department.

While the fashion industry has a long way to go before sustainable and ethical practices become the norm, I wanted to be a force for change in the industry.

  • What section of the neighborhood do you live in and how long have you lived in the neighborhood?
I live on Gallina Circle near the neighborhood pool. My family moved here right before my junior year of high school at 15 years old. I always loved coming back to Halle to visit my family during breaks in college.

  • Where did you grow up?
Memphis has been my home since I was 3 years old. I grew up in Cordova as a child and moved to Collierville when I was 15. It was important to me to launch in Memphis to pay homage to my home city and help rekindle the city’s fashion scene.

  • Tell us about your family:
    -middle child between two sisters
-all of us always held our individual passions and personalities
-eldest sister is now the best mom and has an adorable baby girl (my niece)

  • What are your hobbies/interests?

In my free time, I enjoy traveling to new cities and cooking new recipes with my quarantine herb garden. I can frequently be seen biking around the neighborhood. To grow creatively, I love sketching new designs and reading outside.
