The Walk That Built a Community: The Story of Hallsley's Walking Group

In the heart of the Hallsley community, a group of neighbors has found a unique way to blend
health, friendship, and personal growth. Four years ago, in October 2020, just after the
pandemic, Richard Aminzia and Brandon Pyke started what seemed like a simple idea: a
morning walking group to promote a healthy lifestyle. Today, this initiative has grown into a
cherished tradition that enriches the lives of its members and reflects the spirit of camaraderie
that makes Hallsley special.
Richard Aminzia recalls the origins: “I wanted to find a way to stay in shape that was
sustainable. A friend of mine, Brandon Pyke, expressed the same interest. Because we both
have kids, we figured the best time to consistently get out and get some exercise would be
starting at 5:00 a.m. Walking in the morning gives us a way to get our day started knowing that
we were successful in getting exercise. Having a walking partner helps to keep each other
accountable because we all share the same goal of wanting to be healthy.”
For Richard, the motivation to join the group was deeply personal. “I wanted to keep up with a
consistent workout regimen to keep my blood pressure down without medication due to my
family history of heart disease. A bonus of the morning walks is being able to socialize and
decompress to start each day. The added benefit of walking in groups really gives us something to look forward to every morning. As the group has evolved over the years, I see the positive advantage of both the physical and mental aspects of exercising.”
Brandon Hudson joined the group shortly after its inception. Over time, the group welcomed
Anthony Whitney, Dr. Vernon Orton, Nick Harris, Jerrell Saunders, Will Station, and Dr. Matthew
Austin into its fold. Each weekday, without fail, members gather at 5:00 a.m. Rain or shine, three to six members can be found walking until 6:30 a.m., sharing stories, laughter, and
encouragement. It’s a no-pressure commitment, but the sense of community draws everyone
back every morning.
What sets this group apart is not only the commitment to health but also the caliber of its
members. Among them are Doctors, award-winning entrepreneurs, CFOs, CIOs, VPs, and
bankers. Individual accomplishments aside, they come together to fellowship, learn, and grow
from one another. This humble yet proud dynamic highlights the value of shared experiences
and mutual respect.
The beauty of this group lies not just in the exercise but in the fellowship it fosters.
Conversations range from sports and parenting to healthy recipes and business ideas. It’s a
time to celebrate milestones, big or small, and lift each other up. Each member’s story adds a
unique flavor to the group, and none is more inspiring than that of Anthony Whitney. Having
undergone two kidney transplants and open-heart surgery, Anthony’s resilience is a testament
to the human spirit. When he first joined, even half a mile was a challenge. Now, he completes
four miles with confidence, inspiring all of us with his perseverance.
Anthony Whitney reflects, “I remember when Rich and Brandon started the early morning walks
a few years ago. I was not able to join them because of some health challenges. I had suffered
from a heart attack, and a triple bypass, and was on kidney dialysis during that time. I was
fortunate to receive a kidney transplant in 2023 and was able to join the group in July of 2024. I
now look forward to the morning walks with great conversations among a good group of
neighbors as well as friends. The walks have been beneficial to both my physical and mental
well-being.”
Brandon Hudson’s results have been transformative. He has lost 35 pounds and significantly
improved his cholesterol levels—achievements he attributes to the support and motivation of the group. Brandon shared "Initially, I was nervous about joining because, as a bigger guy, I worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up. In my mind, I imagined these were professional marathon
runners, knocking out four miles in 30 minutes. I was hesitant to join because of my own
apprehensions. But what I discovered was a group of incredibly supportive and encouraging
people who understand that everyone has their own starting point. We’re all out here striving to
improve our health, and that shared goal creates an amazing sense of community". Dr. Vernon
Orton, a robotic urologic oncologist, has also enriched the group’s journey. He hosted a health
summit at his home where he and other board-certified colleagues led discussions on physical,
mental, and spiritual wellness. He’s even planning a first aid and CPR certification session,
further demonstrating his dedication to the group’s well-being.
Matthew Austin, M.D., a neurointerventional surgeon, shares his perspective: “Between work
and family responsibilities, it had been difficult for me to prioritize my own health and social
wellness. Being a part of this walking group has allowed me to bake both into my routine
seamlessly without detracting from my other responsibilities. The added exercise alone
would’ve been beneficial in its own right, but what I’ve found to be equally if not more important
is the community and brotherhood that I’ve been welcomed with. They say ‘you are who you
surround yourself with,’ and it’s been an absolute pleasure being regularly inspired by this group of like-minded, motivated, career- and family- oriented men.”
Nick Harris, who tragically lost his father to a cardiac event as a teen, has focused on heart
health ever since. Nick shared, “The walking group offers more than exercise; it provides two
other aspects of my heart health trifecta, which include mental health and learning and sharing
more about a healthy diet. It’s also a place to share wisdom and gain strength from others on a
similar path.”
Dr. Vernon Orton reflects on how joining the group has impacted his life since July 2024. Initially daunted by the 5:00 a.m. start time, he now finds the walks a highlight of his day. “The walks provide peace, calmness, energy, clarity, knowledge, and laughs,” he says. “I learn from these men, and I am thankful for all of them.”
Will Station emphasizes the inspiration he finds in walking alongside accomplished neighbors
who prioritize uplifting one another. “These walks are more than exercise—they’re a reminder of the strength found in humility, support, and shared purpose,” he shares. “It’s a gift I deeply
cherish.”
Jerrell Saunders, who recently returned to Hallsley, was thrilled to rejoin the walking group. “While living in New York, I truly missed this group. It means so much to walk and talk with like-minded men about the successes and challenges of life. For me personally, staying active is especially important, as the men in my family haven’t lived long lives. These walks help ensure that I remain healthy and active for my family.”
The Hallsley walking group is a microcosm of what makes our community extraordinary:
connection, care, and a shared commitment to personal and collective growth. If you happen to
see or hear them walking at five in the morning, just know it's not Amazon delivery drivers,
construction workers, or anyone suspicious. It's simply a great group of neighbors
fellowshipping, getting those steps in, and embracing the true meaning of community and
neighborhood. Beyond the miles they walk, these are experiences that encompass
conversations, laughs, and the encouragement that makes each step worthwhile. Together,
they’ve built more than a walking group; they’ve built a cornerstone for community wellness.
They hope their story inspires others to take that first step toward health and togetherness.
Whether you’re a seasoned walker or someone looking for a fresh start, there’s always room for more on the path to a healthier, happier life in Hallsley. Join them—one step at a time.
