Soaring to New Heights: Scarlett South’s Passion for Aviation

Scarlett South, a sophomore at James Madison University, isn’t your typical college student—she’s also a licensed pilot with a passion for flying. Having earned her private pilot license two years ago, she’s been charting her own course in the skies ever since. Let’s dive into the story of this aviation enthusiast!
Scarlett comes from a close-knit family, including her two older brothers, Brooks and Peyton, her parents, Mary and Chad, and their beloved dog, Cash. Though she currently lives in Hallsley to be closer to her paternal grandparents, she’s also called New York and Illinois home. Her love for aviation took root early, sparked by childhood memories of playing with styrofoam planes and hearing stories about her great-grandfather, Roger Luker—a WWII flight instructor.
In eighth grade, a school project on World War II allowed her to explore her passion further. Inspired by Luker’s legacy, she chose to research the Tuskegee Airmen and the P-51C Mustang, a fighter plane used to escort bombers. That deep dive into aviation history solidified her dream of becoming a pilot.
Finding the right mentor was a journey of trial and error, but Scarlett found inspiration in Beth Willet, a flight instructor whose positivity and guidance left a lasting impact. She also deeply admires her great-grandfather and all those who have served as pilots, recognizing the immense dedication and sacrifice it requires.
Scarlett has honed her skills at Hanover County Municipal Airport and, more recently, at Shenandoah Airport with Blue Ridge Aviation. Her hard work paid off in high school when she earned the prestigious $10,000 Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Founders Scholarship.
For Scarlett, flying isn’t just a skill—it’s an empowering challenge. She thrives on the quick decision-making and discipline required in the cockpit. One of her proudest moments was her first solo flight, an experience made even more memorable after multiple delays due to high winds. When she finally took off, she felt pure freedom—completely in control.
Her journey in aviation has taught her invaluable lessons: the importance of being observant, disciplined, and quick-witted. And her advice for aspiring pilots? “Don’t compare yourself to everyone else. Whether you’re earning your pilot’s license or training for a marathon, everyone’s path looks different.”
Looking ahead, Scarlett plans to earn her instrument rating and commercial license after graduating with a degree in accounting. Her story is a testament to perseverance and passion—proof that when you work hard, you can truly soar to new heights!
