Meet Hammock Bay’s 2024 Dog Mayor: Romeo Wells

Romeo, a 6-year-old English Bulldog, has been part of his family since his Dad and Mom, Mark and Magdalena Wells, brought him home from Auburn, Indiana. His gruff, wrinkled face may look grumpy, but that’s actually his happy expression. Laid-back and gentle, especially with children, Romeo loves attention. However, he has a stubborn side—when things don’t go his way, you’ll get his infamous “side eye,” a clear sign of his displeasure.

Romeo’s days revolve around one favorite activity: sleeping. After waking up, he goes straight from bed to the couch for more snoozing. When he finally needs to go outside, he’ll bark at the door, and after his paws are wiped due to his grass allergy, he waits eagerly for breakfast. If his food isn’t ready, expect a grumpy bark and that side-eye stare.

Once fed, Romeo heads back to his spot on the couch, where he stays until his French Bulldog companion, Juliet, wakes him up for their afternoon walk. These walks are short, as Romeo and Juliet don’t handle heat well, but they enjoy cooling off with ice cubes afterward. Then, it’s back to napping until dinner.

Though Romeo is a couch potato, he once tried something more adventurous. Inspired by his late bulldog companion, Pablo, Romeo hopped on a skateboard. He coasted down a slope for 40 feet before tumbling off and rolling multiple times. Unsurprisingly, he never attempted skateboarding again!

Romeo’s life changed when he lost his two best friends, Pablo and Layla, a French Mastiff who acted like a mother to him. Their passing left Romeo depressed and lethargic, even affecting his appetite. Concerned for his health, Mark and Magdalena brought home Juliet, a rescue from a puppy mill, and her lively spirit helped pull Romeo out of his sadness.

Now, thanks to Juliet’s companionship, Romeo is back to his usual self—lounging on the couch, giving side-eye, and enjoying his short walks.

In many ways, Juliet saved Romeo, showing that the companionship between dogs can be just as powerful and healing as the love they give to us, and can mend even the deepest wounds.
