Everyone knows about the friendliness and camaraderie of the Hidden Lake community. But did you know about a tradition active since 2006 - the Hidden Lake Golf League? Born out of a desire to bring neighbors together for a weekly dose of golfing goodness, this league has made a significant presence in the community, fostering fun, friendship, and a healthy dose of competition on the green.

It all started with neighbors casually chatting about their love for the game. John Tosoian, a golf enthusiast, was gently coerced into taking the reins and getting the league off the ground. With eight eager neighbors in tow, the inaugural season kicked off at the Moose Ridge course, setting the stage for years of birdies, bogeys, and crazy fun memories.

John, the league's founding father, steered the ship for seven years before passing the torch to the capable hands of Bill Nowak, who continues to uphold the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defines the Hidden Lake Golf League.

One of the league's defining features is its commitment to simplicity, following the KISS principle - Keep It Simple, Sir. Golfers gather at the designated local course each week, form playing groups, and tee off for a leisurely nine holes of golf. With a typical round taking just over two hours to complete, there's plenty of time for banter, laughter, and the occasional miracle shot that leaves everyone in awe.

While the urge to outscore one another is ever-present, the Hidden Lake Golf League prides itself on its non-competitive format. There are no teams, no points to tally, no handicaps to calculate - just a group of friends coming together to enjoy the game they love.  

Over the years, the league has explored various local courses, from Huron Meadows to the challenging Links of Whitmore Lake, each offering unique charms and quirks. And as the league starts its 18th season, it anticipates its third year at Coyote Golf in New Hudson, ready to tackle new challenges and create more unforgettable moments on the fairways.

Amidst the laughter and friendly teasing, the HL Golf League spices up their games with a sprinkle of friendly competition through weekly contests like "closest to the pin" and "lowest number of putts for the round." These mini-games add an extra layer of excitement and challenge to each round, keeping the golfers on their toes and their competitive spirits alive.

The "closest to the pin" competition, set on the short par three holes of each course, invites golfers to showcase their precision and finesse. Landing a tee shot on the green earns a player the chance to stake their claim by placing their name on the marker, with subsequent players aiming to outdo their peers by getting closer to the elusive flagstick. It's a game of skill, strategy, and a dash of luck, culminating in cheers and good-natured ribbing as the closest player emerges victorious.

In addition, the league season up their rounds with the "lowest number of putts" game. Players aim to keep their putting prowess sharp by tallying the number of putts made across all nine holes. The golfer with the fewest putts at the night's end earns the coveted title of putting champion and the ultimate prize of bragging rights for the week. It's a fun and engaging way to add fun to each round and keep the competitive spirit spicy, alive, and kicking!

In recent years, the league has incorporated a fun ritual into their post-game routine: golfers come together at the clubhouse to enjoy drinks, dinner, and good company. They swap stories about their birdies and bogeys, share laughs, and have a great time. It's a moment to relax, socialize, and appreciate the day's play in a delightful and communal setting.

As the sun sets on another glorious year of golfing adventures with the HL Golf League, a whimsical addition has sprouted to sprinkle a touch of magic onto the fairways - the crowning of a league champion. In 2022, the HL Golf League began naming a champion at the end of each year. This lucky victor gets to hold the coveted league trophy, a symbol of their triumph and glory until a new champion emerges the following year.

While the league may not fuss over tracking scores or handicaps, the quest for the championship title adds a thriller element of competition and prestige to their weekly outings. It's not just about hitting the perfect shot; it's about channeling that inner champion spirit and basking in the glory of victory, if only for a year.

Looking ahead to the upcoming 2024 season, the HL Golf League is buzzing with anticipation and excitement. Plans are in motion for approximately 16 weeks of golfing bliss, set to kick off in May and culminate at the end of August at the beautiful Coyote Golf course. Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm are slated to be the league's prime tee-off time, with eager golfers ready to hit the fairways and make the most of every swing and putt.

Rain or shine, the league is committed to providing a memorable golfing experience for all its members. In inclement weather, rounds may be rescheduled, ensuring that every golfer gets their fair share of time on the course.
