Getting Healthy in 2024

A quick conversation with neighbor and integrative nutritionist Mary Virginia Coffman

Stroll Historic Brookhaven: What’s the best tip you have for neighbors who want to get healthy in 2024?

Mary Virginia Coffman: First, look back on the holidays and your choices with fondness. Celebrating with food, drink, and late nights with people you love is much more health-supportive than you may realize. Connection heals body and soul.

My biggest tip for the New Year? Don’t restrict and deny yourself (terrible for mental health)! Do become aware of how your body feels and tune your choices so you feel good. You know the health-promoting foods -- colorful vegetables, fruit, more fiber via whole grains, fruit, nuts/seeds, quality proteins each time you eat, and healthy oils like olive oil. And stay hydrated. Equally important: quality sleep, daily movement, time in nature, play and laughter, and dialing down your screen time. Bit by bit, adopt these habits and you will steadily see better health!
