Welcome to the August issue of Stroll Historic Brookhaven! This issue is dedicated to all things back-to-school.

Our cover family the Paddocks are newer to the neighborhood and look forward to having all three of their children at St. James United Methodist Church’s preschool this fall. Christy is a founder of the Ladies of Historic Brookhaven Social Club’s book club. Ryan founded a luxury, high-end home automation company. Read on to learn about their connection to the NFL, favorite vacation spots, and more.

If you see a yellow school bus in the neighborhood, the Schickels’ children might be on it. They have a third-grade daughter at Sarah Smith Elementary School and sixth-grade son at Sutton. Dad Matt is co-treasurer of the Sarah Smith Education Foundation. He and wife Courtney talked to Stroll about what back-to-school means for their family.

The focus charity this month is the RPM 9/11 5K. RPM stands for Ryan P. Means, a former Historic Brookhaven resident and Army special forces officer. The race is managed by Ryan’s brother Alfie, a West Brookhaven Drive resident, and raises money for the Shepherd Center’s SHARE program.

August’s Precious Pet is Derby Marino. Derby always has something in his mouth, be it two tennis balls or his leash as he walks with owner Anne.

If you were a teenager living in Historic Brookhaven in the 1960s and early 1970s and attended public school, you would have gone to W.F. Dykes High School. Read Landmarks with Lisa to learn the school’s history and why alums call it “Camelot.”

We also cover lots of fun upcoming events to put on your calendar. If you’re looking for something fun to do on a September weekend, check out the upcoming Art Pop-Up+ in Town Brookhaven. Think about attending the One Lamb Initiative’s conference on mental wellness and faith at the Carter Center in November; you can register now. Get details on all the fun at the upcoming neighborhood Street Party.

This issue is full of so much more, including Nancy Jiang’s recipe for  White Ragu and Fresh Beans. Turn the pages and discover all August has to offer for Historic Brookhaven residents.

While my three children have graduated from college, I still look back fondly on August and back-to-school days. They rode the Sarah Smith bus, were part of huge neighborhood carpools later to middle and upper school, and then had a variety of college experiences.

I’d love to hear about your family’s school experiences, vacations, and upcoming plans. Send me an email at lgwargo@aol.com.

Happy reading!
Best,
