Welcome to the May issue of Stroll Historic Brookhaven! This issue is dedicated to neighborhood moms, regardless of their age or children’s ages, work or marital status.
When planning this issue, I posted on the Neighbors of Historic Brookhaven Facebook page seeking moms who would be interested in being part of our Mother’s Day feature. Stacie Hanna, whose husband Mark we featured in our June 2023 Father’s Day feature, wrote me back right way nominating three Club Forest moms. Her descriptions of these women’s dedication to their children, kindness, and helping natures made me want to immediately reach out to them. Two I already knew and had thought about querying. Read on to meet these three stellar moms and their families.
Our featured pet is Zoe Allen, a standard poodle you may see walking with her owner Susan each day. Zoe loves to meet and lick people. Turn to our Precious Pets feature to learn more about Zoe and her favorite things.
Sadly, just as our April issue was hitting mailboxes we found out that month’s spotlight pet had passed away. Our condolences to Bob and Patty Brooker in their loss of Winston.
This month’s Landmarks with Lisa is Max’s Dog Watering Station, a peaceful spot along East Brookhaven Drive built by property owner Gary Mehr for his wife Julia and their now-passed Pomeranian Max as well as for all dogs and their owners who pass by. Learn more about the history of this quiet rest spot and the house that sits behind it.
Our featured charity is Gathering Industries, a non-profit that seeks to offer vocational second chances to formerly homeless or incarcerated individuals by teaching them culinary skills and prepping them to work in restaurant kitchens. I had the pleasure of attending an event where Gathering Industries catered the meal and was wowed by both the food and their mission.
Our May issue is full of all sorts of other news including the latest fashion trends as told by Tootsies’ Sara Mixon to the Ladies of Historic Brookhaven Social Club, a peak at neighbor Sabre Esler’s work on display at the prestigious Venice (Italy) Biennale art show, a travel column on balloon festivals, and more.
I can’t let this issue go by without mentioning what a treat it is to be a mom myself. My children are grown but I still treasure moments with them and am thankful each day they are a part of my life. I lost my own mom seven years ago but was blessed to have her as a glowing example of a mother, friend, sister, and wife.
Enjoy your May, and as always shoot me an email and tell me what’s going on in your life or on your street. Write to lgwargo@aol.com.
Happy reading!
Best,
Lisa Wargo
