1998 Time Capsule Revealed

25 Years of History

Twenty-five years ago, the children of Historic Brookhaven collected items from the time. The items were put in a vacuum-packed bag and buried during the annual Street Party in the Lakehaven-East Brookhaven Drives triangle. An installed plaque noted the time capsule would be opened 25 years later. On Friday, September 29, those items were revealed to the neighborhood during the annual Street Party, although the capsule had been excavated earlier in the week.

What was in the time capsule? The contents included:

  • Hot Wheel toy car
  • Tiger Beanie Babies stuffed animal
  • Dave Matthews Band cassette tape
  • Handwritten program from a neighborhood children's talent show
  • Kids-sized “I Heart Brookhaven” t-shirt
  • Issue of People magazine with a story on Madonna’s 40th birthday
  • Magic 8 ball
  • Issue of the Brookhaven Buzz newspaper

Neighbors have been asked to contribute items for a new time capsule, to be buried sometime after the October 12 Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood Association (HBNA) meeting and opened in 2048. Unlike 25 years ago, the HBNA asked all neighbors – not just children – to contribute items. The items will be buried in a plastic composite time-capsule box and marked with a new plaque. HBNA board member Jamie Lawson headed the time capsule project.
