Welcome to the March issue of Stroll Historic Brookhaven! March 2024 is full of holidays, events, and celebrations. You’ll find ideas for several fun things to do in our Upcoming Events section, including two children’s Easter Egg Hunts that are open to all Historic Brookhaven residents.

Many Atlantans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by heading downtown for the annual parade. If you are one of those, look for neighbor Teresa Finley as the Phoenix School of Irish Arts float passes by. Teresa, who practices an old-style of Irish dance called sean-nós, founded and runs the school as well as the annual Irishfest in November in Historic Roswell.

The High Museum of Art’s major fundraiser, Party with a Purpose wine auction, will take place on March 23. West Brookhaven resident Cathy Rhodes is co-chair this year and had already raised $100,000 for the museum with a new January luncheon. Read on for more details.

With the Oscars falling on the second Sunday of the month, March often brings the silver screen to mind. You’ll probably recognize at least one member of this month’s cover family, the Dunbars, from film and TV series. Rockmond, who played Michael Grant on the first-responder drama series 911, his wife Maya, and their four children moved to Historic Brookhaven three years ago. Learn about their acting and screenwriting careers, why they chose to raise their kids here, their favorite things, and more.

This month’s precious pet Roxy is a seven-pound Schnoodle who likes hiking and playing with goldendoodles despite her tiny stature. While several neighbors have adopted dogs to fill their empty nests, not many have done so while still on their honeymoon. That’s what Roxy’s owners Jim and Ritu Childs did. Read our story to learn more.

If you’re looking forward to spring as a time to refresh your house, peruse our coverage of a recent Ladies of Historic Brookhaven Social Club meeting. Neighbor Anna Wooten Loggins spoke about decorating trends, paint colors, and more.

Our areas historic homes, their design, and architects played a role in the neighborhood receiving its historic designation. In Landmarks with Lisa, we delve into all.

As we look ahead to future months, make sure to let me know if you have a graduating senior so we can include them in our annual high-school graduates tribute. I’d also love to hear about your pets, family, events you host, businesses, and more. Send me a message at lgwargo@aol.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Before closing out this monthly column, I’d like to pay tribute to the man who had the most influence on my journalism career, Michael Lafferty. Michael was a former Financial Times writer who founded a global financial publishing firm based in Dublin. He opened his U.S. bureau in Atlanta after buying a small regional banking magazine that was located here. A few years later, he hired me to launch and write for several of his titles. In the six years I worked for Lafferty Publications, Michael gave me incredible opportunities to grow beyond being just a CPA who could write. He allowed me to branch out in subject matter, cultivate my reporting skills, expand as an editor, and travel the world on business. I always think about Michael as St. Patrick’s Day rolls around. He passed away in January as I was working on this issue. Rest in peace, Michael. Thank you for everything.

Happy reading!
Best,

Do you have a graduating high school senior? If so, let us know!  Every year, we celebrate high school graduates with a tribute page listing each graduate’s name and high school. If you have a 2024 graduate, we want to be sure to include them in our feature, which runs in the summer.

Send an email with your child’s name and high school to Lisa Wargo at lgwargo@aol.com. Feel free to tell us more about your child, such as special recognitions or college matriculation. We’re proud of how hard our neighborhood kids work and want to recognize them for their achievements!
