Charming Eight Treasures Tea

A Gift for the Soul and Perfect for Valentine’s Day

Nancy with Steve

Travel leaves us with treasures whose true value we often realize later. That is true of Eight Treasures Tea, which reminds me of the beautiful friendships I’ve made. It made me realize a simple, soothing, nourishing gift is perfect for Valentine’s Day or any day we choose to treat ourselves.

This cherished recipe was inspired by an unforgettable journey. During my recent trip along the Silk Road in Northwest China, an ordinary detail became an unforgettable highlight.

Tea drinking along the Silk Road is an essential daily ritual, celebrated not just for its flavor but also for its mystical health benefits for the body and mind. In the century-old teahouses of Kashgar, China, I experienced Uyghur herbal teas crafted to complement a hearty, meat-heavy nomadic diet. These teas brought remarkable comfort to the body. As my husband Steve and I continued eastward, I discovered diverse tea variations, each reflecting a shared philosophy of well-being.

One hidden gem stood out: Eight Treasures Tea, a lesser-known delight outside the Kashgar region. This tea captivated me with its enchanting combination of ingredients. Whenever I met friends, I was offered a delightful blend of tea, dried fruits, rose flowers, and rock sugar, always served in a beautifully covered tea cup.

Inspired by these experiences, I created my own version at home, using ingredients readily available in the U.S. Fresh and dried fruits replaced traditional rock sugar for natural sweetness. Brewing this tea fills my kitchen with a delightful aroma, bringing joy and cherished memories. Sharing it with local friends feels like giving them a piece of my journey.

Sometimes, the best gift is the one we give ourselves. May your Valentine’s Day be filled with love, warmth, and the joyful experience of Eight Treasures Tea!
