Ella Hardin: A Record-Breaking Runner with Big Dreams

Ella Hardin, a 17-year-old senior at Hurricane High School, has called Culloden home her entire life. She shares her journey with her supportive family—her parents, Melissia and Jamie, and her brother Maddox. Ella’s dedication to her sport, academics, and future aspirations sets her apart as a standout in her community.

Ella’s journey as a runner began in sixth grade when her best friend, Addie Poling, encouraged her to join the cross-country team. “We were two shy middle schoolers who didn’t want to try something new alone,” Ella shared with Stroll Hurricane. That first step began a passion that would transform her life. From starting in the back of JV races, Ella’s hard work and determination have taken her to incredible heights. This year, she broke Hurricane High School’s girls’ cross-country record with an impressive time of 18:04, surpassing the previous record of 18:23.

Ella salutes her coaches and family for supporting her.  “None of this would have been possible without my coaches and family backing me all the way: Melissia Hardin, Jamie Hardin, Maddox Hardin, Christy Lewis, Dru Bora, Jimmy Cunningham, Jonathan Fee, Tom Belmaggio, and Eric Cooper.” Jimmy Cunningham said about Ella, “She is one of the hardest working runners I have ever had the privilege to coach, and I’ve got to coach her the last 7 years. You never have to worry about her putting in the work, and most of the time she’s doing more reps or faster times than she is given when doing her workouts.”

Ella credits much of her success to the running community, which she describes as “like no other.” She has built lasting friendships through the sport, from her original group of teammates like Asha Bora and Audrey Hall to the boys' cross-country team, who welcomed her with open arms. “Thanks to running, I’ve made friends across the state and even the country. It’s something truly special,” she said.

Her favorite memories from running highlight the camaraderie and joy she’s found in the sport. Whether it was outdriving her teammates at Top Golf during a meet in Louisville or jumping through the waves on a beach in Brisbane, Australia, Ella cherishes the connections and experiences running has brought into her life.

Balancing academics and athletics is no small feat, but Ella excels by giving her all in both areas. “I focus on working hard during school to limit what I need to do at home after practice,” she explained. “At practice, I’m there to improve myself and also to spend time with my friends in a sport we all love.”

After high school, Ella plans to attend Marshall University, where she’ll continue running while pursuing a doctorate in zoology. Her dream is to travel the world studying animals in their
natural habitats. “I’ve always been passionate about animals and science,” Ella said.

Ella’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and community. “I started as a shy sixth grader at the back of the pack,” she reflected. “But through hard work, I’ve achieved things I once thought impossible.”
