Building a Beautiful Life: The Hinckson Family’s Experience in Hurricane

The Hinckson family, residing on Rosecrest Drive, brings a unique blend of cultural richness and community spirit to Hurricane. Bruce and Jess have built a warm and welcoming home alongside their children: Sanaa (21), who lives in Ft. Lauderdale and works as a brow stylist, Bowen (19), attending PCTC for Electrician training, Kate (17), an upcoming senior at Winfield High School, and their youngest, Harper (3).

Bruce, a Sales Manager at Dutch Miller Kia in South Charleston, originally hails from Georgetown, Guyana, and grew up in Miami after moving to the U.S. with his mother. Jess, a stay-at-home mom with a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from Marshall University, grew up in Milton. The couple tied the knot on January 3, 2020, just before the world paused due to the pandemic. "We took our honeymoon two months before the world shut down. lol," Jess shared with Stroll Hurricane.

Their love story began at Ground Zero Fighting Systems, a BJJ gym, where Bruce, a former professional MMA fighter from Ft. Lauderdale, walked into Jess's life. Together, they enjoy taking weekend trips, reading, and spending time with their family. Bruce humorously notes that his hobbies are "working out and work." The Hincksons' favorite vacation destination is anywhere in Europe, and they passionately support the Miami Dolphins and enjoy watching MMA.

Family dinners at the Hinckson household range from indulgent lasagna to healthy Bulgogi ground chicken and rice. ". A cherished family tradition is Bruce's mother visiting every holiday season to prepare traditional Guyanese Christmas dishes like Pepperpot, curry goat, cook-up rice, and cheese rolls. "It’s AMAZING," Jess exclaimed.

When we asked about something their neighbors may not know about their family Jess responded, “If you’re friends with us on social media, you know pretty much everything.,"
The Hincksons have lived in their neighborhood for three years and cherish the quiet, close-knit community. "We have wonderful neighbors who have become close friends. Our street is quiet and mundane, and that’s the beauty of living here," Jess noted. The family enjoys the slow-paced lifestyle with convenient access to great restaurants and larger cities, appreciating everything Teays Valley and Hurricane have to offer.

Their children are actively involved in various activities. Kate, who recently became Drum Major for Winfield High School, is also deeply involved in show choir. Bowen, is often seen with his lifelong friends, who have been a group since their kindergarten days, and he spends most of his time with them, while Harper enjoys swim lessons at Sleepy Hollow.

Jess emphasized the community's growth and potential: "Teays Valley/Hurricane has a lot to offer and we’re excited to see the community continue to grow."

The Hincksons' story is one of cultural diversity, community involvement, and a deep appreciation for the life they’ve built in Hurricane, and we are happy that they are part of our community.
