Bright and Warm Spa-Like Oasis

How Sunny Interior Design Transformed Jennifer and Roger Shorr's Master Bathroom

Spa vibes and warm elegance are the cornerstones of this transitional-style primary bathroom. Jennifer and Roger Shorr wanted a light and bright open bathroom that felt like being in a spa without sacrificing warmth. Project challenges included the location of the shower turn-on valve and the closed-off nature of the existing shower area. Before the renovation, there was wasted space with an awkward vanity design and a makeup area that was not needed.

Resident Julie LaBruna with Sunny Interior Design resolved their issues by adding a knee wall that houses the shower turn-on valve, conveniently located in the steps into the shower to turn on the water without getting wet. She removed the existing shower enclave, enlarged the shower area, and made the previous step-down shower a curb-less design. Symmetry was brought into the space by making his and her vanities the same size and equally spaced on either side of the new free-standing tub. The beautiful and substantial tub filler with sprayer adds elegance and is the jewelry of that area.

Spa features were added by creating a wall-to-wall horizontal niche with LED dimmable adjustable lighting and a separate shaving niche below. Large format 24 x 48 Catania white tile was used on the shower walls and bathroom floor, carefully paying attention to every detail, including mitered edges and carefully thought-out tile pattern. The shower floor is a mix of marble pebble tile, and a tiled linear drain adds to the spa-like feel of the shower. A new Toto toilet with a bidet seat was added to the water closet, as well as textured luxe gold wallpaper and decorative shadow boxes.

Two dramatic feature walls behind each vanity and the tub, with floor-to-ceiling marble mosaic tile, bring interest and warmth. Champagne bronze plumbing fixtures, acrylic and brushed bronze mirrors, oversized sconces, and free-standing vanities in a walnut whitewashed finish tie nicely into our warm elegance theme.

"When Julie and her men had completed the bathroom, she asked me my thoughts about it and if I liked it. I said, Julie, this is not a bathroom; it is an experience! “In fact, to this day, it remains a sensational experience." - Roger

"Since we are limited to the number of stars we can award Julie, we are certainly giving her a five-star rating, but I’d really like to give her more. If you work with this outstanding designer, we are quite certain that you will be thrilled with whatever project she does for you. Thanks, Julie!"- Roger
