The Camhi Family

A Legacy of Love, Laughter, and Togetherness

Nestled in our warm community of IBIS, the Camhi family has built a life rooted in connection, humor, and love. For 16 years, they’ve been integral members of this neighborhood, known for their warmth and vibrant spirit. Their story, however, begins long before IBIS—back in Brooklyn, New York, where Ira Camhi’s journey first began.

A Love Story Born in the Dentist’s Chair
Ira Camhi’s path to love is one for the books. A dentist by profession, Ira wasn’t expecting a patient to change the course of his life. But when Barbara, a spirited and kind woman from Rockaway, New York, walked into his office with a toothache, everything changed. At the time, Barbara had been referred by her boyfriend to Ira’s workplace, but fate had other plans.
From that fateful appointment, a relationship blossomed—one built on laughter, mutual respect, and an undeniable connection. Today, Ira fondly describes Barbara as the funniest, most caring, and kindest person he knows. Her humor and generosity extend far beyond their family; she’s a beloved figure in the IBIS community, where she’s known by nearly everyone. Her reputation for kindness is well-earned, as she makes it her mission to bring joy to everyone she meets.

A Family to Be Proud Of
The Camhi family tree is full of vibrant branches. Ira and Barbara’s children, Shelby and AJ, have followed their parents’ footsteps in pursuing meaningful and fulfilling lives.
Shelby, a speech therapist, is a beacon of compassion. She spends her days helping individuals with special needs, blending her intelligence, friendliness, and drive to make a difference in people’s lives. Her work embodies the values the Camhis hold dear: kindness, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.
AJ, the family’s charismatic and athletic son, has been a source of pride since his teenage years. At just 16, he represented the United States in the 1997 Maccabean Olympics—a remarkable achievement that underscored his dedication and leadership skills. Today, AJ continues to inspire those around him, whether on the court, in his professional life, or as a devoted family man.

Adding to the family’s joy are their grandchildren. Lia, at 19, is a sophomore at the University of Rhode Island, working hard toward her dream of becoming a nurse. Angelina, 17, is in her senior year of high school and is known for her sweet, caring nature and fun-loving spirit. Then there’s Sloane (9) and Avery (7), both bursting with energy and talent. Sloane’s basketball skills and Avery’s sweetness light up the Camhi household during family gatherings.
And of course, there’s Brody—the “PRINCE” of the family. At just 18 months old, he’s already a star in his own right, delighting everyone with his playful, silly antics. He embodies the best traits of his parents and grandparents, ensuring the Camhi legacy of humor and charm continues.

A Welcoming Home in IBIS
The Camhis didn’t find IBIS by accident. After leaving New York, Ira and Barbara were in search of a community that offered not just amenities but a true sense of belonging. Friends suggested Ibis, and it quickly became the perfect place for their family to thrive.
Ibis has provided a backdrop for many cherished family memories, from relaxing days on the golf course, where Barbara has shot six hole in one’s,  to intense games of pickleball and canasta. The Camhi’s are also avid theatre enthusiasts, often attending musicals together, and they never miss an opportunity to see a great standup comedian.
Beyond recreation, the Camhis have deeply woven themselves into the fabric of the community. Their philanthropic efforts span across causes like the Wounded Warrior Project, Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Shriners Hospitals, Tunnel to Towers, and St. Jude. For the Camh’is, giving back is as much a family tradition as holiday gatherings or vacation adventures.

The Humor That Binds Them
In the 80’s Ira would often close his dental practice around Halloween and perform magic shows for his patients and neighbors. Laughter is the glue that holds the Camhi family together. One story, in particular, has become legendary in their circle: the day Barbara met Julie, AJ’s wife, for the first time at the airport. The encounter was filled with the classic Camhi humor and playfulness, setting the tone for Julie’s seamless entry into the family.
Julie, often mistaken for a nanny because of her youthful appearance, has become a beloved daughter-in-law. Her warmth and dedication as a mother and wife make her an indispensable part of the family. Alongside Ralph, Shelby’s husband—a dependable, caring, and all-around “standup guy”—the Camhi in-laws fit perfectly into the family dynamic.

Cherished Traditions and Values
Holidays and special occasions in the Camhi household are always celebrated together, whether in Florida or New Jersey. These gatherings are filled with laughter, love, and a shared appreciation for the time spent as a family. The Camhi’s also treasure their vacations, which have created some of their most memorable moments.
Through all their accomplishments, adventures, and philanthropic endeavors, the Camhis remain grounded in the values that have always defined them: love, laughter, and a commitment to helping others.

A Legacy of Love
When asked about their favorite part of living in Ibis, Ira and Barbara will tell you it’s the people—the friends who have become family and the community that feels like home. Together, they’ve built a life filled with cherished memories, from quiet moments of reflection to joyous family milestones.

For the Camhi family, life is a celebration of togetherness, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
