Kelli Mills
Capturing the Wild Beauty of Isle of Hope
Since moving to Isle of Hope in 2011, local photographer Kelli Mills has found endless inspiration in the isle's natural beauty. Kelli, originally from Savannah, was drawn to the neighborhood for its close-knit community and abundant wildlife. Mornings on Isle of Hope often begin with Kelli watching the sunrise along Bluff Drive or paddleboarding through the waterways, always with her camera in tow, ready to capture the magic of the day.
Kelli’s love of photography started in childhood, but a safari trip in South Africa sparked her true passion for wildlife photography. She found a similar thrill in Isle of Hope’s “daily safari,” discovering and photographing everything from foxes and owls to alligators and dolphins. Her commitment to capturing these creatures in their natural habitats has led her to adopt methods that allow her to observe without disturbing them, including dawn outings and even “leopard crawling” to stay hidden.
Working digitally has helped Kelli perfect her craft, allowing her to experiment without the costs of film. Over the years, she’s had guidance from local photographers and experts, which has sharpened her skills and deepened her appreciation for the isle's ecology. Her images have been featured at the Isle of Hope Art and Music Festival, where she now contributes by photographing the event.
For Kelli, photography is a way to foster respect for Isle of Hope’s wildlife. She hopes her work encourages others to see the beauty in animals often feared or misunderstood. In her words, “Each living creature plays a role in the circle of life.” With her lens, Kelli Mills captures the wonder of these creatures and the delicate balance of their environment.
