Since its founding in 1969, the Parkersburg Garden Club (PGC) has been dedicated to horticultural education, civic beautification, and fostering neighborhood connections. Each year, the club hosts its Annual Cards & Games Party, an event that blends social engagement with fundraising for ongoing community projects.
On Tuesday, February 18, participants gathered at Isle of Hope Methodist Church Fellowship Hall for an afternoon of cards, games, and camaraderie. The event supported the club’s efforts to maintain and enhance public green spaces. Attendees enjoyed friendly competition over bridge, mahjong, and other games, and proceeds directly benefitted local beautification initiatives.
“This event is not just about playing cards,” said member Elisabeth Biggerstaff. “It’s a way to bring the community together and ensure that our green spaces continue to thrive.”
PGC maintains several cherished areas, including the LaRoche Causeway, Paxton Park, and the Riverview Healing Garden. At the Savannah Botanical Garden, the club also cares for a designated space on Eisenhower Drive, reinforcing its commitment to horticulture beyond the Isle of Hope.
Paxton Park, created as a gathering space for residents and visitors, remains a focal point for club efforts, with ongoing enhancements made by dedicated members—often with a little help from family and friends. The Riverview Healing Garden, inspired by PGC member and avid gardener the Rev. Patti Davis, is the club’s most recent undertaking. Designed as a tranquil outdoor retreat, the space officially opened in October 2023 after a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Mayor Van Johnson.
With 26 members, each tending to their own gardens across Isle of Hope, PGC remains deeply rooted in its mission. Whether through seasonal plantings or new projects like raised beds for heirloom seeds, the club continues its work, ensuring that when one bloom fades, another takes its place.
