Corner of Love Comes to Kingwood
Tanya and Nelson Amador
Nelson & Tanya Amador are new to Kings Point, having just moved here in April 2024. When they first entered the neighborhood, they immediately fell in love with The Cove and were thrilled to find their forever home.
For more than twenty years now, the Amadors have been missionaries in Latin America, serving God by helping vulnerable people in remote places like Nicaragua, Colombia, and now, the northern-most part of Costa Rica. Nelson left San Ramón, Nicaragua, in 1983, the last of nine siblings sent to safety in the US during a dangerous post-revolution era. Ten years later he returned home to introduce his American wife, Tanya, and their children to his hometown and a way of life he still longs for. Together they dreamed of how they could help rebuild San Ramón and nourish people both physically and spiritually. In the year 2000, they began working to make this dream a reality.
For over two decades now they have traveled between Latin America and the U.S. for numerous ministry activities associated with their non-profit organization, Corner of Love. Upon returning to America, they always headed back to Seattle, Washington, Tanya’s birthplace, to rest and reorganize before the next round of missions. But a few years ago, they began hearing the Lord call on them to move. The long flight to Washington State was becoming too much and they sought a place just one plane ride away from their Corner of Love headquarters in Costa Rica.
They were looking at both Texas and Florida and thankfully, God showed them the way. They visited many communities in and around Houston and felt led to settle here in Kingwood. For months they searched and prayed that the right house would come along. They have a one-year-old granddaughter and four adult children (two are married) that visit often when they’re not in the mission field. When they discovered Kings Point, it immediately felt right! The trails, ponds, and lake are amazing! They love that the house they chose on Palisade Falls even has a swing for their granddaughter, Baby Sarah! They already love The Cove and the beauty of this area.
They left a very tight-knit community in Washington and hope to create a wonderful circle of new friends here. Their charity, Corner of Love, is a growing international mission that has been serving Nicaraguans since 1992. Tanya shared with us some details about their mission.
Today, Latin America is in complete crisis. More than 7 million people are moving throughout the hemisphere, most fleeing government-sponsored paramilitaries and gross human rights violations in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. Some head to Mexico and the U.S. but many want to rebuild their lives in neighboring countries and long for resolutions to the crises at home. Most of them dream every day of returning to their homelands. As one of Central America’s most stable nations, Costa Rica receives a high percentage of migrants, even to the point of threatening its own stability. Since 2018 over 500,000 Nicaraguan refugees have poured into the country, creating an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Corner of Love has responded to this crisis by opening a Relief Center in La Cruz, Guanacaste (Costa Rica) near the Nicaragua-Costa Rica border. At this location, refugees are warmly welcomed and connected with key resources enabling them to stay in the country legally.
Here they provide free medical, dental, and optical services, emergency food, clothing, bedding, shoes, backpacks, and refugee-direct donations for transportation, legal services, and shelter. Hot meals are also served as Corner of Love is uniquely positioned to successfully assist large quantities of refugees due to its long track record of humanitarian work with the Nicaraguan population. Prior to the socio-political crisis that broke out in April 2018, Corner of Love worked for nearly 20 years in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. There, the organization has a Plaza that houses ten exam rooms, a dental clinic, and a Leadership School. On average, 30,000 impoverished Nicaraguans have been receiving services from the organization annually.
Corner of Love has numerous volunteer healthcare brigades each year in Costa Rica. Doctors, nurses, dentists, and assistants join participants from all over the world to aid refugees at their border facility which hosts a pharmacy, refugee kitchen, medical, dental, and optical service areas, and containers with supplies for distribution.
The Amadors hope to host an event soon to share their mission and meet more of their neighbors. They are excited to add to the vibrancy and friendliness of Kings Point!
