Sully the St. Bernard

What’s your origin story, Sully? My beginnings, I am grateful to say, are now many-a-distant dog park away. At age 1 ½, I was abandoned at a Fire Station in Seagoville, TX. I was malnourished and so badly neglected that I had hardly any hair on my body and was covered instead with a nose-to-tale horrible skin rash. The firemen quickly & wisely contacted the Arlington-based group, Paws of Love Animal Rescue so I could be fostered and eventually adopted out to Emily & Eduardo. www.facebook.com/dfwpolar

How are things going now? I’ve been with E&E, and my St. Bernard brother-in-arms, Davey, for 3 years now. All my luxurious hair has now regrown, my rash is gone, and so is my anxiety. What a great day my abandonment was!

What is the story behind your breed? According to history, long ago, a monk by the name of Bernard of Menthon, would give respite to people traversing a treacherous, 8,000 ft snowy passage on their way to Rome. These pilgrims were often trapped under snowbanks as high as 40’ tall or befallen by an avalanche. Over time, the monk trained and developed unique and powerful dogs with the ability to track and rescue those in need. For this effort, Bernard was later named Patron Saint of Mountain Climbers by the Pope in 1923. Thus St. Bernard. So you see, I come from a long line of doggie do-gooders. I love that about me.

Any special or unusual traits, Sully? Some would say my absent tale begs a story about me… but let’s not dredge up any more bad puppyhood memories, okay? Let’s just say that   between my 3-legged dog-brother and me, we make quite the pair. When we go out on our walks, all the lady-dogs look our way – arf!

Fun Fact: When E&E bought their house on the M Streets, they were presented with the house key by the former owner. The owner had a daughter, and the daughter had a name, and guess what that name was? Wait for it… you got it… of course it was Sully! So my coming to live with E&E and Davey, my brother-dog, was meant to be. My canine karma is clearly ascending.

Favorite Activities? Sunbathing, slobber kissing E&E, chasing squirrels, chewing on a bone -   being a lazy-bones. Guess you could say I’m all dog.

What else should we know about you Sully, and how have you enriched your home/family? My dog-bro Davey had become a bit lethargic and inactive, until yours truly came around. Now my big brother is back to his regular dog-shenanigans. And I always make Mom feel good about herself, because, well, I weigh more than she does! More than all that, we have blended so well together and have made quite a fine quartet. The true Saints of this story are Emily and Eduardo - my saviors, my family and favorite of all humans.
