Charting Progress: District 14's 2024 Vision for Growth and Community Support

2023 Year in Review Letter from Council member Ridley

District 14 Neighbors,
As we ring in the new year, I want to take a moment to look back on a few events in 2023 and some exciting things to come in 2024!
Last spring, after nearly five years of discussion, City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting Short Term Rentals in single family zoned neighborhoods in Dallas. Short-term rentals will be permitted in multi-family zoning, but only in buildings of over 20 units, and subject to strict caps on the number of STR units allowed. The Council’s action is a major victory for neighborhoods and resident quality of life.
District 14 showed its generosity in 2023! In July, my office teamed up with local sponsors and Districts 2 and 7 to provide arboretum tickets, school supplies, and a free pool day for hundreds of families. In October, I hosted a Halloween event at Exall recreation center, where we gave out enough cady to get the kids through the rest of the year! In November, through the partnership with Services of Hope, District 14 was able to provide 50 Turkeys to the Roseland Home community. Finally, I am extremely proud of the donations to my annual Holiday Toy Drive! 2022 was a huge success and 2023 was even better! Toys, socks, shoes, and books were donated to dozens of families at Roseland Homes, Family Gateway and Martin Luther King Jr. Center.

Looking ahead to 2024, there are two major initiatives happening not only in District 14, but citywide. First and foremost, the 2024 Capital Bond program. This 1.1 billion dollar bond package aims to fund crucial infrastructure projects for the City’s growth and development. You can find a list of proposed  projects on the City’s Bond website. Following the current schedule, the 2024 bond package is being ironed out this month and will be brought to the voters (you!) this spring. The second is the Dallas City Charter. Last year, the Council-appointed Charter review commission met 7 times to examine and discuss potential revisions to the City’s governing document. This year, this commission will be bringing recommendations to the City Council by May 21, 2024 for approval and submission to voters in November.  Amending the charter is done every ten years.

Entering this new year, let's make time for growth, progress and creating a supportive community. Wishing District 14 a happy New Year!
