Nyawenha Skannon (I Am Thankful You Are Well)

Since 2021 our family has planted its roots in this vibrant community, drawn by its trails, creeks, and the people who make Manlius a wonderful place to raise a family. Born and raised in the Onondaga Nation community, I’ve always valued a connection to the land and the stories it holds. It’s a joy to discover those same treasures here.
Our household is a lively, multigenerational crew with personalities as distinct as the seasons. At its heart is June, the matriarch and spirited grandmother. You may have spotted her in her cream-colored Mini Cooper, windows down and music blasting—driving with her is less a ride and more a front-row seat to a concert. A retired teacher from the LaFayette Central School District, June still works as a substitute teacher, sharing her love for learning with a new generation. Lucky for us, her Carolina roots also mean we are regularly spoiled with down-home Southern cooking.
At the helm of the household is Nathan Anderson, a Pennsylvania native who recently took on the role of administrator at a local skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. His mission is clear: to create a space where exceptional care meets genuine comfort. His dedication to compassion shines through both at work and at home, where his steady support keeps our family grounded. When he’s not leading his team or guiding our family, Nathan can be found at a local racetrack, training motorcycle riders and traveling the circuit to support athletes and friends.
The youngest member of our household is Hadowaets, a spirited seventh grader at Eagle Hill Middle School. He’s an avid hockey player for the Valley Eagles, sails at the Cazenovia Yacht Club, plays box lacrosse for the Onondaga Redhawks, and when the waves call, he surfs. On snowy days, you might catch him snowboarding or playing with friends in the neighborhood. His two best companions are our dogs: Hank, a mischievous chocolate lab puppy, and Hi’ne—meaning “Thunder” in Tuscarora—a dignified 6-year-old German Shepherd Chow mix.
As for me I grew up at the Onondaga Nation where my heritage continues to shape who I am. I’m a journeyman lineman with Local Union 1249, traveling to restore power during emergencies and volunteering abroad to bring modern electrical systems to communities in need. When I’m not working, I create handmade jewelry, I am a board member of the Native Roots Foundation, I volunteer with local homeless aid organizations, and participate in cultural and language revitalization efforts within Indian Country.
Our family finds joy in simple pleasures. You can often spot us playing in Limestone Creek or walking our dogs around the neighborhood. Friday traditions are sacred—Hadowaets and Nathan can be seen carrying pepperoni pies from Pavone’s, while June and I sneak across the street for a bit of pampering at B & E Nails. We love the thoughtful touches of small-town life here, from the unique offerings at Manlius Supply Co. to cozy evenings at the Manlius Cinema.
As we continue to settle into this community, we look forward to meeting new friends and building lasting connections. We’re grateful to call Manlius home.
It's a pleasure to meet you,
Asa Shenandoah
