Meet Your Neighbors, The Hopen Family

Pat and Maggie Hopen relocated to Meridian Hills from the Nora area in April.  They have three children:  Luke (11), Sam (9), and Jude (7).  Their family pet is Skipper, an Australian sheep-a-doodle.

Pat, an ophthalmologist, and Maggie, a photographer who specializes in family and newborn photography, share a passion for travel.  In their free time, Pat enjoys golfing, while Maggie finds joy in gardening and home decorating.  With their kids involved in basketball and baseball, they are always in sport mode.

Maggie is currently in her fifth year of a six-year commitment with the Children’s Museum Guild, a nonprofit organization tied to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.  The Guild, comprised of 100 women, contributes over 38,000 volunteer hours each year.  Their efforts support a wide range of activities at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary on January 1, 2025, marking a century of engaging and educational exhibits.

This year, Maggie is serving as “Head Witch” of the Indianapolis Children’s Museum Haunted House, which is the longest running haunted house in the United States, celebrating its 60th anniversary.  Relying heavily on local support, The Haunted House raised $755K last year, with many supplies such as paint, lumber, nails, and the candy and stickers they pass out, all being donated.  Planning begins a year in advance, with the build taking 6-7 weeks.  Each year features a new theme.  This year’s theme, “Witch Way Road Trip,” takes its visitors on a journey along Route 60 leading them to Boneyard Beach.  Along the way, guests will encounter the hazardous highway and make stops at the “bug and breakfast motel,” a ghastly gas station, and a dead-end diner, to name a few.  INDOT donated road signs, AAA contributed old roadmaps, and the BMV created a special “WITCHWAY” license plate to elevate the theme and give an Indiana touch.  The Haunted House runs from October 10th through October 31st, with both friendly and frightening hours, for preschoolers through teenagers.  In addition to the daily Haunted House, there are several other events during the month of October that can be found on their website https://www.childrensmuseum.org/exhibits/haunted-house

The Hopens were initially drawn to Meridian Hills by its golf course, which was a perfect fit for Pat, and its closer proximity to their children’s school.  The home’s modern floorplan, recently transformed with exquisite renovations by Monarch Construction Company, combined with the appealing golf course view, made it the ideal choice for their family.  Maggie is having fun adding pops of color and wallpaper to make it their own.
