Pickleball!!
Marian Erikson
Pickleball is the hottest thing going on now. It's fun, healthy and a lot of people are participating. Do you want to learn how to play pickleball? Moore’s Ferry neighbor Marian Erikson is an IPTPA Certified Pickleball Instructor. We asked her to tell us more about the nation's hottest thing.
Do you know anyone who plays pickleball? Chances are you do or will soon - it’s been America’s fastest-growing sport for the past three years, with people of all ages, from kids to seniors, playing.
Part of the appeal of pickleball is that it’s easy to learn. A pickleball paddle is smaller and easier to handle than a tennis racquet for example, and there’s a lot less ground to cover - 4 pickleball courts can fit onto one tennis court.
Best part? You still get a workout! Pickleball is good for cardiovascular fitness as well as hand-eye and neuro-muscular coordination. And while many quit their exercise programs after a few months, people tend to stick with pickleball because it’s extremely social.
When I attended my first beginner pickleball clinic I was an avid tennis player, but now I no longer play tennis – it takes time away from pickleball! I was hooked. I quickly fell in love with the sport and Hickory’s pickleball community.
Several people told me they’d like to try pickleball but had no idea where or how to start. So, I earned my International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA) certification. Now I teach others how to play, participate in the pickleball community, and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Pickleball can add both physical activity and social connectivity to people’s lives.
My speciality as an instructor lies in working with beginner to intermediate players, focusing on technique, strategy, and the game's mental aspects. After a 2-hour beginner clinic, people have learned the basics and are ready to play! I then help them join leagues and open play sessions with others at the same skill level.
Fellow Moore’s Ferry resident Brian Beach, attended my Pickleball 101 clinic and had the following to say in a review, “Marian’s clinic was awesome. We were introduced to multiple skills to help improve our overall game. The lesson was action-packed with coaching advice as we practiced. It was very helpful, but most of all, it was a lot of fun!”
Teaching pickleball is very rewarding as I share my passion with others. As well as playing whenever I can, I run the pickleball leagues at Pebble Creek Sports Club. I’m also a Tournament Director, having recently run a fundraiser tournament at Rock Barn Country Club for Family Care Center. Eric and I have even become fans of pro pickleball; we’ve attended events in Cary and Atlanta and plan to attend more.
