Aging Victoriously

There is a growing economic and public health crisis stemming from obesity, chronic
disease and unhealthy aging. Part of this health crisis is nutritional as well as
physiological. We will focus briefly on exercise physiology.

We lose about 1.0% or more of skeletal muscle each year starting in our mid-30s. The
gradual nature of muscle mass and strength loss often isn’t realized until the fifth
decade of life as it compounds year-over-year. By the time most people reach age 60
they have unknowingly lost up to 35% of their muscle mass and by 75 it is 50%!

The good news in a multitude of studies indicates that muscle mass and strength can
be regained quickly. In fact, in one Exercise Coach study of six thousand female
clients, the average strength gain on the leg press was thirty percent after the first six
weeks of resistance training.

Independent studies have shown large increases in strength following brief (<15
minutes), infrequent (2 x /week) strength training. A group of males and females (mean
age = 55 years) performed only 5 exercises (pull-down, chest press, seated row,
overhead press, and leg press) over a 10-week duration and showed increases ranging
from 40-90% in maximal strength. Strength training reverses aging in skeletal muscle,
both at a cellular and functional level. In that sense it is not an unrealistic goal to “have
a biological age equal to, or lower than, our chronological age”, and indeed strength
training has been referred to as “the prophylactic to aging”.

However, the benefits of strength training extend beyond
aesthetics or physical abilities. Strength training improves body
functioning through healthier management of hormones, stronger
immune system, improving cardiovascular fitness, metabolic
health,(pre-diabetes, type 1 and 2), bone density (osteopenia &
osteoporosis) and neurological functioning. The evidence
ultimately concludes that “strength training is medicine,” serving to
reduce risk of all-cause mortality as well as to improve quality of
life.

At The Exercise Coach Powell, we take great satisfaction knowing that our clients are
accomplishing these very things through our Exerbotic (Strength Training) machines.
Our program is safe and effective, and our clients are aging victoriously. YAY!!!
