Where Are They Now? The Legacy of Franklin Regional Wrestling

Two decades ago, Franklin Regional Wrestling faced a pivotal moment. The program was on the verge of being discontinued due to a lack of participation. Only 13 wrestlers were on the roster, barely enough to field a team. Yet, thanks to the determination of the community and its young athletes, the program didn’t just survive—it thrived.

Today, Franklin Regional Wrestling is recognized as one of the top programs in Pennsylvania, a state known for producing some of the nation's best wrestlers. This success is not just measured by state championships but by the lives shaped by the sport.

The legacy of Franklin Regional Wrestling continues to shine brightly as we look back on the remarkable journey of a group of boys who, as 10, 11, and 12-year-olds, began their ascent through the ranks. It all started when six of them made the varsity team as freshmen and placed in the Top 8 at the State Championship. Now, in 2024, they are sophomores, and a new group of talented wrestlers is following in their footsteps.

The Beginning of a Wrestling Powerhouse

In 2002-2003, the Franklin Regional (FR) wrestling program was on the verge of being cut. The wrestlers and their families, passionate about the sport, went to the school board to plead their case and managed to save the program. This determination set the stage for what would become one of the most successful wrestling programs in Pennsylvania and the nation.

By 2014 and 2015, Franklin Regional had won back-to-back state championships, cementing their place in history. Over the years, they placed 15 wrestlers in Division I college programs, produced national and world champions, and solidified Pennsylvania as the number one wrestling state in the country.
Building a Dynasty

Since those early days, Franklin Regional has produced a steady stream of top-tier talent. The program reached its peak in 2014 and 2015, capturing back-to-back state championships. But the real story is the wrestlers themselves—the young men who used wrestling as a platform to launch successful careers in various fields.

Over the years, 15 Franklin Regional wrestlers have gone on to compete at Division I colleges, many earning All-American honors. These athletes have represented Franklin Regional on the national stage, competing against the best in the country and proving their mettle.

Life After Wrestling: Where Are They Now?

The lessons learned on the mat have propelled Franklin Regional wrestlers into successful careers. Alumni of the program have gone on to become physicians, lawyers, Navy SEALs, and military academy graduates. The discipline, perseverance, and mental toughness cultivated through wrestling have served them well in their professional lives.

One such alumnus is Nico Megaludis, who not only excelled in high school but went on to win a national championship at the collegiate level. Another standout, Spencer Lee, has become a world champion, embodying the highest level of success in the sport.

The Next Generation of Champions

As Franklin Regional continues to build on its legacy, the next generation of wrestlers is already making its mark. Young athletes like Titus Colangelo, Michael Ruane, Salvatore Nassif, Chase Smith, Coen Buccicone, and Ethan Cartwright are following in the footsteps of those who came before them, pushing themselves to new heights and setting the stage for future success.

Rising freshmen Max Firestine and Beau Fennick have already shown their potential, placing 2nd and 3rd, respectively, at the State Tournament. These young wrestlers are poised to carry the Franklin Regional tradition forward, competing at the highest levels and continuing the program's legacy of excellence.

Looking Ahead

The future of Franklin Regional Wrestling is bright. With a strong foundation and a commitment to developing young talent, the program is well-positioned to continue its tradition of success. The community's dedication to the sport, coupled with the hard work of its athletes, ensures that Franklin Regional will remain a powerhouse in Pennsylvania wrestling for years to come.

As the next wave of wrestlers takes to the mat, they carry with them the legacy of those who came before—wrestlers who turned a struggling program into a dynasty, and who used their experiences to build successful lives beyond the sport. Franklin Regional Wrestling is not just about winning matches; it’s about shaping young men into leaders, ready to take on the challenges of life with the same grit and determination they showed on the mat.
