Clayton Maze served as an Active Duty Combat Medic (68W) in the U.S. Army from 2012 to 2016. Stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, he was the senior line combat medic for his battalion, responsible for preparing soldiers and officers for deployment. His role was critical, working alongside physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, ensuring readiness for the challenges ahead.

A deeply personal memory during his service was the birth of his son, Dawson, at the Army base hospital at Fort Polk. This experience, along with the unpredictable nature of military life, brought both challenges and profound growth for his family. It was during this time that his path toward becoming a Nurse Practitioner began to take shape—a journey he completed this year, influenced by his time as a combat medic.

Clayton also received the Army Commendation Medal for saving a civilian’s life. While off duty, he encountered a man experiencing a heart attack and was able to step in, assisting alongside a lone police officer, ultimately saving the man’s life. This recognition from his battalion commander at 2-4 Infantry 10th Mountain Division remains one of his proudest achievements.

Reflecting on his military experience, Clayton shares that the journey was one of the hardest and most transformative for him and his family. The constant change and unpredictability of military life forced them to grow in ways they hadn’t expected, leaning on their faith and the relationships formed within the military community.
