Arlene Joyce's Remarkable Journey
Embracing Empathy And Crafting Memories
How old are you? 84
How long have you lived in the neighborhood?
Arlene has lived at Hallmark House in Norton Commons for about six months.
Can you share a memorable experience or story from your life?
Arlene started walking with a friend several years ago and completed the Kentucky Derby Mini Marathon when she was 70 years old! Some of her children followed in her footsteps and to this day, they all admire her dedication.
Are there any particular accomplishments or achievements that you are proud of?
Arlene was born in 1940. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Zoology and married her husband Paul in 1962. Arlene worked in a research lab and also at Shillito’s before having five children in seven years. Arlene dedicated her life to being the most loving, kind, patient, and fun mom ever! She loves animals, especially the two dogs and three cats they had when her children were growing up. When her children were grown, Arlene spent several years watching children at her house. The young children all called her Mama Joyce. Arlene then worked for several years in the Oldham County school system, where she assisted and encouraged many high schoolers with their research papers/projects and spent time helping them with computers or talking with them when they just needed encouragement. Several students returned after graduation to thank her for caring about them and having an impact on their lives.
Are there any life lessons or values that you would like to pass on to future generations?
Arlene would say, "Show empathy to everyone you meet. You never know what someone may be going through, and your kindness may be the thing that brightens their day."
How do you stay mentally and physically active?
Arlene learned to swim when she was young and although she was NOT a fan of her synchronized water ballet classes, she was an excellent swimmer. She took water aerobics classes and swam at the Oldham County Aquatic Center for fitness and fun.
Can you share a personal philosophy or motto that guides your life?
Arlene's motto has always been to be kind to everyone and "offer it up" when things don't go your way. She also believes you should not ask someone else to do something for you if you are capable of doing it yourself.
How have your interests or hobbies evolved over the years? Are there any new activities you have taken up recently?
Arlene has always loved crafts and skillfully created corn husk dolls, macrame plant holders, clam shell ornaments, and Nativity figures back in the day! She also enjoyed working on puzzles and still does that now.
Is there anything else that you would like to share?
Arlene is the definition of a "sweetheart." She always has a smile on her face and kind words to everyone she meets. Her family has great love and admiration for Arlene and they are very involved in her life here at Hallmark House. The Hallmark House loves the Joyce Family!
