Meet the Neighbors: The Swann Family’s Journey in Northriver
From College Sweethearts to Community Pillars: The Swanns' Story of Family, Business, and Adventure
In the heart of Northriver, where Southern hospitality and modern living meet, the Swann family has found their perfect home. Originally from Tuscaloosa, Matthew and Erin Swann, along with their three young children—Truett (6), Hampton (4), and Sterling (2)—and their 10-year-old Boxer Lab mix, Dewey, have seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the neighborhood. In just a year, the Swanns have become not just residents, but vital members of the community, bringing with them a blend of energy, entrepreneurship, and a deep love for family and community life
Matthew and Erin Swann’s story begins in their college years, where a chance encounter during a spring break trip to Panama City Beach set the stage for their lifelong journey together. After their beachside meeting, their relationship blossomed, rooted in shared values, a love for Tuscaloosa, and a mutual commitment to making the most of every opportunity.
Erin pursued her passion for healthcare, earning a degree from the University of Alabama, and then her doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her dedication to helping others has always been a driving force in her life, and it’s a trait that continues to define her both personally and professionally. Meanwhile, Matthew built a career grounded in business, with a knack for identifying opportunities and turning them into successful ventures.
In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swanns took a bold step by purchasing Dixie Battery, a well-known local business. Matthew, who had worked at Dixie Battery since he was 14, took over from his father, and they also launched Dixie Custom Carts. This new venture reflects Matthew’s entrepreneurial drive and the Swanns' desire to enhance their community. Dixie Custom Carts quickly became the go-to place for high-quality golf carts, catering to Northriver’s vibrant lifestyle. It’s been wonderful to see the neighborhood embrace this new business, with families and preteens enjoying their rides around town.
Relocating to Northriver was a natural choice for the Swanns. “We wanted a place where our children could grow up surrounded by nature, a strong sense of community, and a place where they truly belong,” Erin shares. The neighborhood’s scenic beauty, welcoming neighbors, and family-friendly amenities made it the perfect setting for their family life.
Truett, Hampton, and Sterling are actively involved in various activities that reflect their parents’ values. Truett has taken a keen interest in baseball and tennis, showing talent and enthusiasm. Hampton, brimming with energy, enjoys t-ball, while Sterling has already shown a love for dance. Their participation in these activities helps them build character, friendships, and a sense of community. They attend ACA, a local school known for its strong academics and supportive environment, where they’ve quickly made lasting friendships.
The Swanns are always eager to explore the neighborhood’s parks and natural beauty. Harbor Ridge Park, affectionately known as "Paw Patrol" by the children, is a favorite spot for imaginative play. The Lakes Park, often called "Geese Park" due to its resident geese, and Rock Quarry, or "School Bus Park", are also beloved by the family.
In addition to their family outings, the Swanns are active members of the Northriver Yacht Club. They enjoy spending summers at the pool and dining at the golf club. Erin, who values staying active and social, participates in a local tennis clinic.
When reflecting on their favorite family moments since moving to Northriver, the Swanns cite their sunset cruises from the Captain’s Club. As the sun sets, the family heads to the marina in their golf cart, and the kids turn the outing into imaginative adventures, pretending to be chased by sea monsters on Lake Tuscaloosa.
The Swanns have quickly woven themselves into the fabric of Northriver, embodying the values of family, entrepreneurship, and community engagement that define this vibrant neighborhood. Their transition from Tuscaloosa to beloved Northriver residents showcases their dedication to building a life of purpose, connection, and joy. As they continue to grow their business, nurture their children, and enjoy their surroundings, the Swanns exemplify how love and determination can turn dreams into reality.
Northriver isn’t just a place to live; it’s a thriving community where families like the Swanns can flourish and create lasting memories. “Seeing families and preteens cruising around in their golf carts brings us so much joy,” says Erin. “It’s wonderful to be part of a community where people are embracing this lifestyle. It’s not just about the business for us; it’s about contributing to the neighborhood’s vibrant culture and connectivity.”
Their golf carts have become a symbol of the community’s spirit, making it easier for residents to enjoy the picturesque streets and local amenities. As Northriver continues to grow, the Swanns are excited to be part of a place where their business supports a lifestyle they truly believe in.
