Meet the Merchant Family: A Heart for Sports, Community, and Family Fun
The Merchant family, residents of Oakmont Estates, are an active and tight-knit family that fills their days with sports, community involvement, and cherished traditions. Trey and Corie Merchant, along with their three children—Britton and Madden (9-year-old twins) and Sutton (7)—make the most of their time together, especially in their family's beloved basketball gym.
For the Merchants, basketball is more than a hobby—it’s a way of life. Whether practicing in their home gym or cheering for Texas Tech, basketball brings the family together. Trey, a former basketball player at Lubbock Christian University (LCU), has passed down his love for the sport to Britton and Madden, who play for the Lubbock Legends. The twins also play football for Cooper, showing that their athletic talents extend beyond the basketball court.
Sutton, the youngest, shares her family’s competitive spirit but channels it into a different passion—horse riding. She dreams of becoming a barrel racer one day, and her love for horses fuels her dedication to riding.
The Merchants’ commitment to family time extends beyond sports. Sunday church at Monterey Church of Christ is an important tradition, one that Trey and Corie have cherished since before they married in 2013. Their weekends are filled with cheering for Texas Tech’s basketball and football teams, attending every home game they can.
Family movie nights are a favorite way for them to unwind, especially in their home theater. Watching Disney classics or "Home Alone" movies during the holidays makes for cozy, fun-filled evenings together.
Trey and Corie’s love story began in high school at Frenship, where Trey was a basketball player and Corie a cheerleader. They've been together for 20 years now, building a life filled with shared memories and achievements. Both Texas Tech University graduates, their bond with the school runs deep, as does their love for the Lubbock community.
Trey and Corie’s dedication to their community shines through their involvement in various charitable and educational endeavors. Trey runs a foundation called Heaven’s Gates Advocates, which helps those in need in Lubbock and surrounding areas. Corie stays active with her children's PTO at Lubbock-Cooper Central Elementary and serves on the board for the Lubbock-Cooper Education Foundation. Recently, she chaired the auction for Wine Women and Shoes, benefiting the YWCA of Lubbock.
The Merchants are also pet lovers. Their 12-year-old Mal-Shi, Harlow, and 1-year-old Cavi-poo, Honey, are beloved members of the family. Whether it's playing in the backyard or lounging after a day of activities, the Merchants' furry friends add to the warmth of their home.
Having moved to Oakmont in 2020, the Merchants have found a supportive, close-knit community where they’ve built lifelong friendships. Their favorite part about living in Oakmont? The sense of community and the opportunity to give back through events like the neighborhood coat drive that benefits the city of Lubbock.
With a love for Tex-Mex—Rosa’s and Taco Villa are their go-to spots—and unforgettable family vacations, like their Thanksgiving trip to Hawaii in 2022 to watch Texas Tech in the Maui Invitational, the Merchants truly know how to balance fun, family, and service.
The Merchant family embodies the spirit of togetherness, and their love for sports, community involvement, and making the most of every moment shines through in all they do.
