Lubbock Impact
Did you know that on the corner of 34th and Boston sits a ministry that those in need call the miracle on 34th street? Lubbock Impact is a faith-based nonprofit that has been serving the Lubbock community for the past 15 years. The mission of Lubbock Impact is to serve the working poor who do not have the resources to meet their basic needs. Lubbock Impact comes alongside individuals to help in the areas of food, clothing, health care and spiritual growth. Starting out as a soup kitchen in October of 2007, Lubbock Impact served its very first meal to 50 people. Today, Lubbock Impact has served over 450,000 hot meals to those in need. Every Wednesday night at 5:30, people gather in Lubbock Impact’s dining hall to enjoy a hearty meal and join in on fellowship. Another resource that Lubbock Impact offers in the area of food includes the Food Pantry. Set up like a small grocery store, participants spend an imaginary $7 on basic food items, such as canned goods and pop-top items. In the area of clothing, Lubbock Impact provides basic necessities through The Clothes Closest and Shoe Closet. Open Tuesday and Thursday mornings by appointment, a participant can come shop every 30 days. All clothing is donated to Lubbock Impact from the community. The clothes are all sifted through by volunteers to ensure the closets are stocked with quality items. In 15 years, 150,000 people in need have received clothing from Lubbock Impact. During Lubbock Impact’s early years, they saw a growing need for health care in the community. For individuals who are uninsured, access to quality health care is nearly impossible. In August of 2009, Lubbock Impact began to host Texas Tech University Health Science Center’s Free Clinic. Open every Wednesday at 4 p.m. and run by volunteers, The Free Clinic sees around 25 patients each week on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additionally, Lubbock Impact runs the Free Dental Clinic, offering tooth extractions from volunteer dentists every Wednesday. The Optometry Clinic, open one Saturday a month, offers a free eye exam and a new pair of glasses. These health care resources are for individuals ages 18 to 65 who are uninsured. The fourth area Lubbock Impact provides is spiritual care. Being a faith-based organization, Lubbock Impact seeks to share the hope and love of Christ with all people who enter their doors. Regardless of the individual’s background, they will be welcomed as family. There are times during the week when men, women and children can worship and participate in Bible-study groups. This miracle on 34th street would not run without volunteers who invest their time. Only having two full-time and two part-time employees, Lubbock Impact operates primarily on volunteers who oversee resources such as The Free Clinics, Clothes Closet, Community Meal and much more. Furthermore, Lubbock Impact relies solely on donors who desire to be difference-makers in our community. Lubbock Impact truly is a gift from God where people of all ages can find needed resources and leave knowing their community sees their struggle and is willing to come alongside them.
