Eric Farr, VP Wealth Advisor
Farther, a Venture-Backed Fintech Disrupting Wealth Management
Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area? Tell us about your family.
I was born in Mount Pleasant, SC in the Sweetgrass neighborhood. Since my dad was in the Air Force, our family moved to Vegas then to Eagle River, Alaska for five years. We then moved back across the country, to Hilton Head Island, SC, where I grew up. I live on James Island with my partner in crime Rachel and our two yellow labs Millie and Mugsy. We love the outdoors and can often be found canoeing, paddle boarding or surfing around the creeks by our house and on Folly Beach. We also love traveling, recently driving all around Italy, and now planning a surf trip to Costa Rica at the end of February.
Tell us about the events that led up to where you are now (i.e. education, career path).
The day after graduating from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, I had my eyes set on moving back to Charleston. I picked up a job downtown Charleston with a large Financial services provider which ultimately led to a career into the wealth management industry and to the company I am with now. I have been so lucky to have many amazing mentors along the way who taught me valuable life lessons.
What is your business and how/why did you start your business?
Farther is a boutique private wealth offering that fuses expert advice with modern technology: enhancing the client experience, reducing costs, and democratizing bespoke services for an expanded audience. We cater to complex, sophisticated, and larger account-size relationships. I joined the Farther team after meeting another local, Keith Sauls, who is now my business partner. We have an office in Mount Pleasant.
What is unique about your business?
First off, our incentives are aligned. We have the freedom to offer unbiased advice. We’re fiduciaries, so we have a legal obligation to act in your best interest, and to put our clients first. Second, we build our own technology. That does a few things for us. It provides you the transparency you need to plan for and monitor your whole financial picture, access to the best-of-the best financial products, and control to better manage the day-to-day, like optimizing for lowering your taxes or putting your cash to use. And finally, we’re more than just investments. Our goal is to provide a customized experience that brings your entire financial life into one place.
What kinds of services / products do you provide, and what can a customer expect from hiring you?
Farther caters to high net worth professionals who are building generational wealth and need a more holistic approach to managing their money. We work with founders, executives, families and institutions such as nonprofits, foundations and endowments. Customers can expect to receive honest, unbiased advice, and a relationship built on trust.
Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (whether general or specific) can you offer to the residents?
I would recommend to tune out the noise, and don’t follow the headlines on tv that are there just to instill panic. Working with an Independent Advisor that understands your values and long term goals is essential to ensure you are maximizing your dollars while minimizing risk. We are here to help you create a plan and help you stick to it in times of uncertainty.
What else should we know about you, your family, or your business?
My ultimate goal is to live out my purpose helping like minded individuals who also value their health, family, and giving back to the world. I find immense joy in seeing my clients achieve their goals and live out their best life.
