The Kodish Family

Embracing Adventure and Community in Old Village

There’s a special energy on King Street, where Brett and Dana Kodish have made their home with their two young children, Cora, who’s five, and Keller, two. The Kodish family has called the Old Village home for four memorable years, infusing the neighborhood with their love for outdoor adventures, good food, and a strong sense of community.

Originally from Alpharetta, Georgia, Brett and Dana both attended the University of Georgia for their undergraduate and graduate studies, making them dedicated Bulldogs fans through and through, or as they howled, “GO DAWGS!” After some years away—first in chilly Connecticut for Brett’s medical residency, then in sunny Hawaii—the couple found the perfect mix of coastal charm, food culture, and neighborhood pride in Mount Pleasant’s Old Village.

Professionally, Brett and Dana have exciting and varied careers. Brett is an emergency physician, bringing his care and expertise to the ER, while Dana is a geologist with a deep curiosity about the world beneath our feet. Beyond their day jobs, the two are also co-owners of The Bays, an indoor golf club on Coleman Boulevard. Together with two other local couples, they envisioned The Bays as a friendly, welcoming spot where golfers of all levels can practice and community members can gather, socialize, and even try their hand at the game. This venture has quickly become more than just a golf club; it’s become a place where neighbors connect, share laughs, and enjoy the camaraderie that makes Old Village special.  It’s amazing to witness the value, uniqueness, and impact starting a local business can bring to our community.

When they’re not at work or spending time at The Bays, Brett and Dana make the most of the local scene. You’re likely to spot the Kodish’s enjoying a family day on the Pitt Street Bridge, catching a sunset on Sullivan’s Island, or walking along Shem Creek. Their appreciation for local dining is extensive, and they’re often seen frequenting places like Ty’s, Verns, and Chasing Sage, not to mention their go-to family spots like Mozzo, Jasmine Thai, The Obstinate Daughter, and Post House. Food, in general, is something the Kodish family embraces wholeheartedly. Brett’s specialty is a Vietnamese pancake dish called Bahn Xeo, a recipe he learned during their travels in Vietnam. This dish has become a family staple, especially for gatherings, where guests dive into assembling their own pancakes and savor the fun of a shared, messy meal.

Though they enjoy exploring Charleston’s local gems, the Kodish’s are no strangers to adventure farther afield. Some of their most cherished family vacations have been skiing in the Italian Alps, a trip made possible by a tip from their former au pair, Chiara. They’ve also explored the vast, breathtaking landscapes of Colorado’s national parks and frequently head down to Florida to visit family and play a few rounds of golf. Closer to home, Daufuskie Island offers them a chance to unwind and slow down, giving their children a taste of life at a slower, coastal pace. Even a weekend around Charleston can feel like a “staycation,” allowing them to enjoy the best of their beloved hometown.

For their children, Cora and Keller, Old Village is filled with its own set of special experiences. Cora has recently started ballet and loves her swim classes, with hopes of joining a swim team soon. Keller, though younger, eagerly follows in her sister’s footsteps, already captivated by the neighborhood and all it has to offer. Both kids adore their school, teachers, and classmates, and they especially love trips to the Pitt Street Pharmacy for a scoop of ice cream or to the Sweet Shop for a hot dog—a sweet reward after a fun day.

When it’s time to relax as a family, the Kodish’s love nothing more than a leisurely golf cart ride through the neighborhood, taking in the scenic oak-shaded roads, beautiful architecture, and, during the festive season, the holiday decorations that make Old Village glow. As members of the Old Village boat club, they also enjoy sunset cruises, fishing excursions, and beach-hopping adventures that allow them to spend time on the water. For Brett and Dana, Old Village is more than just a place to call home; it’s a vibrant, connected community where they’ve made meaningful friendships and lasting memories.

With their boundless sense of adventure, deep family bonds, and love for the local community, the Kodish’s have become a cherished part of the neighborhood. Whether you see them cruising around on their golf cart, greeting neighbors at The Bays, or simply relaxing at one of their favorite local hangouts, they are always open to a friendly hello and a warm conversation. Next time you’re around King Street, keep an eye out for this wonderful and welcoming family—they’re sure to bring a smile to your day!
