The Stories You Told and Announcements You Made

In 2024 we learned so much about our amazing residents!  From Murph bending a knee to Alice at a Sunset Social, the Penningtons celebrating their 50th anniversary, Dawn Sautter winning a 10k at 80 to featuring the Stafford's and the Balloqui's grandkids in interviews, as well as the Dodd family's Halloween traditions of dressing up on the 1-way. But there was much more:

In March we read about Mariana Hurley's in-home ceramics studio where she creates Italian-inspired pieces and teaches classes.  We learned about Tim Root's talents and hobbies in the March and April issues. Tim has amassed a large collection of arcade games. He has also built a game from scratch.  In addition to Tim's day job as an optometrist, he is also a published author.  He wrote a young adult action novel titled Benjamin Impossible: The Helium Heist

July's issue featured a couple of historic yachts that passed through our waterways.  Toni and David Slick gave us a detailed account of their cruise to Japan and South Korea in the September issue. October's issue featured Brian and Lisa Alexander's amazing tiki hut.

Finishing out the year, Sebnem Studner shared in November her ongoing efforts to save street dogs in Turkey.  Jim Popham shared his unique humor with the story of a stolen mailbox and a piece of wood.  The year also included several photo essays by Resident Photographer Bonnie Turetsky!

Chuck and Pat Gleichmann
February saw the beginning of what can only be described as a movement, sparked by an article written by Tyler Corson.  We were introduced to Pat and Chuck Gleichmann and their work with the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida. The Gleichmanns later shared with the Stroll community an opportunity for residents to help clean our waterways.  This call to action resulted in several work days, 24,000 oysters drilled, and many residents hanging vertical oyster gardens off their docks.

RJ Dodd
In April Resident Writer Tyler Corson brought us another interesting story highlighting RJ Dodd's rise in competitive video gaming.  RJ, son of Residents Paul and Daynia Dodd, is a student at Father Lopez High School and competes in tournaments around the country.

Ed and Pam Connor
In April Resident Writer Nancy Neeb shared a touching story about Pam Connor's journey with cancer and her husband Ed's new role as caretaker.  Pam did not let cancer take her joy.  She continued to remain positive with Ed at her side the entire way.  They show us what it means to be there for each other in sickness and in health.

Helen Faucette
In June Resident Writer Tyler Corson interviewed Helen Faucette. Helen played college basketball at Delaware State University. She shared how far women's sports, in particular basketball, have come in her lifetime.

Nancy Burt
In July Resident Writer Tyler Corson shared the story of another pioneering female, Resident Nancy Burt.  Nancy earned her pilot's license in 1979, though few jobs were available to female pilots. She went on to fly for Pan Am Airlines and represent her peers for the Airline Pilots Association.

Ed Connor
In August Ed shared his passion for mountain climbing in his younger years. All the peaks he reached and the exhilaration it brought. But also the unfathomable story of living through the tragedy on the south face of Aconcagua, Argentina where two friends right behind him, were swept off the mountain summit never to be found.
